ForeFlight 6.1 just released

Whats the deal with the Pack thingy and the charts. If I have Foreflight set to already download all the charts, why do I need to download them again?

I'm not sure I understand it either.

i just loaded a short trip within my home state. The 'Pack' told me I needed to download huge meg's of taxi info/charts, etc.

I thought I already had those items downloaded.

The "pack" feature sounds pretty useful for folks like me who don't DL the whole US. I have everything around me downloaded, but when planning a significant cross-country flight several states away I supposed it could be much faster than manually downloading everything (and hoping I didn't forget a state along/adjacent to the route).

But I admit I don't know why it would ever ask you to download anything if you already have the whole country...

Perhaps that the reason for PACK.:dunno: Now you will know.

They were already there. I've used the charts/taxi diagrams, etc frequently. No update was available. So I'm not sure what was downloaded that I didn't already have.
Oh well.....

Short answer: You don't. (There was a chart cycle update just a few days ago, are you sure you had everything up to date?)

Pack also downloads more than just charts. It'll also grab the latest METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, TFRs, fuel prices, and airport NOTAMs so that you have access to them all during flight. Did it show that you were downloading charts, or was it downloading the above info?

It also means you don't have to download the whole country all the time. I used to do that, but more recently started running into space limitations, so I started just downloading my home state and all bordering states as that takes care of maybe 80% of my flying. Now, I don't have to manually select all the states I'll be flying through/over or go back and de-select those states after the trip. Plus, the aforementioned last-minute data dump for weather, NOTAMs, fuel prices, etc. I like it. :)

Something is screwed up with ForeFlight then. I have the IFR low and High charts already, but on a simple trip of just 30 miles, the pack highlights red and says I need to download 1.1 GB of data which includes a 2mb METAR etc.., 614 kb fuel prices, 58kb Airport Notams, then 749 MB IFR low charts, and 370 MB IFR High charts..

I already have those damn charts.. :mad2: :D

^^^^This. I agree.

See your PM's...

How do you open the pack?

Touch the suitcase icon.

I played with it today. A lot easier than going to file and brief to get your weather. It loads it all for you.

It does nothing when I tap the suitcase. It just says all packed?

It just means that any data you might need in flight is properly cached. If you turn of wifi and LTE, you'll see METARs and tafs as of when you "packed". There is nothing to "unpack"; just use the app as normal, except now you can access things like fuel prices and comments--previously on available with an internet connection.

Just loaded the update, going to play with the pack in the morning.

I wonder if we can delete a 'pack' after the trip?
