Neat stuff coming on the F-150 platform in 2018, looks like.


Nice to see they kept the Coyote engine... that's still my favorite in that truck, but...

But a 3.0L Diesel... if they manage to keep the tow ratings high... there's a huge hole in the mid-weight towing market right now...

Going to be interesting to watch!
 
Sounds like they're chasing Nissan's Titan XD which came out last year. The bright side is, Nissan's truck is hideous, so a Ford with a diesel may sway a lot of folks. Personally, I'm sure the markup on the diesel will be high enough that it would be a non-starter for most. I'd rather go SuperDuty if I'm going diesel.
 
Good friend bought a Dodge Cummins diesel when they came out with it years ago. I thought you were a Chevy man I said, he was but said hewanted that Cummins. Doesn't that Titan have a Cummins too?
 
A friend of mine bought a 1 year old F-150 a couple months ago. Man, it is just one step away from being a ladies dressing room....

Meaning it is nice.....

Nothing to chase. That's an awful engine, and the Titan can't tow jack for weight.

It's Cummins badged, but doesn't resemble other Cummins engines at all.

I suspect Ford is chasing Dodge's little diesel more than they're chasing Nissan's. Both are wimpy tow numbers, but they've been selling "okay" enough that Ford decided to play.

Here's hoping they put theirs on a chassis that can at least muster mid-sized tow-weights... the weight capabilities of all the "HD" lines has been going up so rapidly in the Great Towing Wars, that they're way out of touch with most people who want to tow legally (per the yellow sticker on the door AFTER all the butt-warmers, leather seats, and various accoutrements have been added and lower the GCVWR number significantly and usually almost max out the axle ratings)... I just don't need a truck that can pull 28,000 - 30,000 lbs. Nor the price tag of one.
 
No argument there. $60K for a basic 3/4 ton crew can diesel is crazy, not to mention the $75K they end up being for the fully-optioned versions.

I just don't think you'll see many 1/2 ton trucks able to tow a 12K lbs trailer with the control that a 3/4 ton or better will. Ford will need a heavier differential, springs, brakes, and likely 8-lug wheels/axle. In the competition for ride quality, it's a tough line to toe when people expect a luxury sedan ride with the F-150 these days.

I'd probably have gone the half-ton diesel route if it had been available 4 years ago when I needed a new truck. Today my needs to easily park in a crowded lot are less than they were and my truck is seeing a lot more towing and hauling use and I'm finding myself wishing I had a 3/4 ton. Pulling power isn't the issue, the 5.0 with 3.73 rear end has more than enough of that. What's bugging me is the half-ton just feels light... maybe it's all ride engineering they put into it IDK but it feels like I'm driving a lightweight truck and trying to control a heavy trailer with it. I can steer/stop just fine.... heck I was volunteered to move a horse in a blizzard once and was able to control the whole rig in a skid once but the feel of it still just bugs me.
 
Ford also announced the Ranger will be available in 2019 and the Bronco in 2020.

A family down the street had a Pinto when we were growing up, a wagon complete with faux woody sides. It was an automatic, and quite possibly the slowest car I've ever ridden in. Another family had a Levi Gremlin, blue exterior with Levi bluejeans as the seat upholstery. Those were the days.

Yup. I bought a new in '72 Vega GT. Kept it 9 months and dumped that POS. Replaced it with a 350 V8 used '72 Monte Carlo, one of the best cars I've ever had. Same car & color as below.

Oh yeh! I remember the dealership was selling Yenko Z-28s I think w/ 427s. I can only imagine what one of those is worth today.

Man, the concept Bronco looks pretty sweet. I bet it sells like hotcakes, and steals a bunch of potential (and current) Jeep Wrangler/Toyota FJ buyers. It's the cool version of the Bronco, not the full size behemoth, or the Bronco II abomination.

And to think we took those old cars that now sell for mucho $$$ and made dirt track cars out of them.....:(

In 1978 I took a driving '67 Chevelle SS and made a dirt track car out of it. Except the hood. Many years later I sold the hood for probably more money than I made racing that old Chevelle.... I still have the L78 396 that came out of it. I took it apart and coated everything to try to deter rust. It is still sitting in storage waiting for me to rebuild it and put it in something.

Funny... I think it's ugly too, but because it looks like a Ford! Apparently Car and Driver thought it looked like a Ford too. Car and Driver - 2016 Nissan Titan

In fact, so many people thought they looked alike that Nissan felt they had to dispute it and had their dealerships put out this information.

No effing way...the F150 looks nothing like the Nissan lol. In fact the new F150 is my favorite body style of all time and I think the new Nissan Titan is one of the ugliest trucks of all time.

Lol, that's the thing, side profile is very similar to a Ford, but the roof-line and front fenders aren't squared-off like the F-150, which makes the Nissan look strange with the angular rear portion of the truck. The front end (grill/bumper) looks like they stole some cues from the Tundra, and the tailgate looks like a hodgepodge from Dodge/Toyota/Ford. I just don't think it works well as a whole. I like the new F-150s, but the SuperDuties are starting to get comical with the over-embellished chrome detailing. GM's are pretty boring until you get to the newer 2016's with the PTM'd grill/bumper. Ah well, I'm not in the market to buy any of them, so it's not as if my opinion affects any of the auto-makers' bottom lines!

You have to admit there are similarities whether you like the Nissan or not. I agree, it's not an attractive truck, but the taillights look almost interchangeable from the side, the way the window dips down next to the mirror, and a few other things. And apparently I wasn't the only one who saw the similarities. If you Google it, there are a lot of stories about how they look alike.

Some will argue that a truck is a truck and there's little you can do to be different, but they all copy each other. Chevy had taillights on the mid-2000s trucks that had two circles sticking out... Dodge soon copied. I think Ford came out with a tailgate protector and Dodge and Chevy copied.

I remember those cars well, my dad was in the AMC business for a while in the early to mid 70's, those Levi packages!! :eek::eek:

Nobody is chasing Nissan in the full size truck market. :rolleyes: The Frontier does OK, but the Titan has never sold well in the Atlanta market, I think it's the same all over the country. The Titan XD doesn't seem to be jumping off the lots either, good idea, just not many people looking for a full size diesel think about Nissan. :D

Has Ford even issued pics of the concept Bronco? All I have seen in the announcements were pics of the old Bronco.

Nothing official, but lots of artist renderings like this which could be accurate, or 100% wrong, lol.

The Bronco is a guaranteed seller unless they seriously screw the pooch on the looks. It'll be a "nostalgia" item that makes people think of their youth.

Just rumors and they have only recently confirmed it would be built, a buddy of mine has seen the concept and loves it, but he can't say anything much about it or they'll have to kill him!

100% BS! The new bronco will just be a rebadged explorer and their new ranger will just be a f150 slightly downsized. The ranger will most likely be the same four door truck they sell to other markets that is just a rebodies explorer per say.
My brother and I were just talking about this a couple weeks ago, we both had Rangers, he had more than one and we really loved them. Small, simple, reliable and fit our needs very well. Over time the other small truck makers kept making them bigger and bigger till they were just the same as a half ton. I don't need bells and whistles and a whole bunch of useless gizmos. I just want a small truck that has a heater and maybe ac, a five speed manual and a decent little engine. Will it be able to haul an ocassional sheet of wood or some two by fours, if yes then check, will it haul my motorcycle , if yes then check, can I throw some garbage and scrap in the back, if yes then check. That is all I want or need. Don't need leather seats, electric mirrors, stupid graphic packages or anything else.
 
I have a 2006 V6 Tundra, and the newer Tacoma are the same size now. I'm like you, something simple without all the other crap works. It's a friggin; PU truck after all. I swear every other drive way in my subdivision has a big, decked out 1/2 and/or 3/4 truck, always clean and no dents. Oh well, different strokes for different folks.

I dunno, the Explorer isn't slated to go anywhere that I've seen, and they'd be crazy to get rid of the Explorer branding because it's so well-known by now. I thing the Ford Everest is the Explorer-equivalent overseas, but it's not something that would lend itself to the 2-door Bronco image. I thought I saw that the Jeep Wrangler (with all of it's various iterations) sells around 250K units each year. I think Ford may want to get a piece of that action, and trying to make a 2-door version of an Explorer (which is a FWD platform) just doesn't seem like it would work. Surely Ford doesn't want to do to the Bronco name (which has a ton of consumer goodwill attached to it) what GM did to the LeMans/GTO. The Ranger is supposed to be redone for 2019 for ALL markets, so while it will be "the same" as the other countries, it will be different from whats currently being produced. Now, whether that's just a body-style change remains to be seen.
