I'll be in the area of Monument Valley over the weekend and would like to take a detour to fly over it. Looking at the sectional, I see no airspace restrictions. The closest non-private airport appears to be 0V7, Kayenta. Is there anything I'm missing as to why I can't fly over it? I'd like to get pretty low for some pictures as well, if that's possible.

No restrictions. Have a safe and scenic flight. There may be a couple planes doing scenic tours but most of those are closer to the canyon.

No services at Kayenta, its on the rez.

500' away from any person, vessel, vehicle or structure and you're good to go.

Been there twice.

Especially dramatic is flying low over one of those mesas and go shooting out over the edge. One of the few times in flying I get a real feeling of height.

Enjoy!

Don't forget the camera !!!

Just keep your eyes looking for traffic, there are some Twin Otters and others flying in and out of UT25 at Gouldings, near the park entrance.

UT25 uses 122.9 from the last time I was there

You can land at UT25 if you fax them a release in advance.

When I was there, some sheep were crossing the runway on departure, but some locals scared them off quickly.

Be aware, there is _nothing_ in Kayenta. Not even a washroom.

If you do it, fly north to the the Colorado river and follow it into the Grand Canyon (observing Grand Canyon restrictions). I think this route is more impressive than the canyon itself.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be sure to get pictures on the flight. I may try and land at Bluff (66V) just to do it but otherwise it looks like I may land at Page (KPGA). The weather is looking good for the weekend as well so it should be a fun flight.

Land at U25 and eat at the restaurant. The runway terminates in a bluff, so it is one way.

Monument Valley to Page is a nice flight, on a good day and with some luck you can see the rainbow bridge as well.

Definitely land at the Monument Valley airstrip and take a land tour. They have several every day, and you don't need much advance notice. Look at http://www.gouldings.com/ for information, airport info on the MORE tab. To repeat, it is a private airstrip, and you need permission to land--see the website.

By the way, the folk at www.ctflier.com have an annual CT Fly-In to Page each fall. Other brands welcome.

Thanks to Roger Lee and others for making that happen.

I took some stills and videos from our 2012 trip there - if I have time I'll try to post a couple later.

Should be on every pilot's bucket list!

Feeling a bit lost. The trip from CA to Monument should run about 5 hours, which isn't bad, but the sectional drives me nuts. I don't see a reference to Monument VAlley there. I can see the airports you're referencing, but not the valley. Where is it on the sectional?

Go to 0V7 on the sectional/ForeFlight, then look north east and you will see the words Monument Valley written in dark grey diagonally.

It is much more impressive in person than it appears on the sectional

At least the pavement is still on the runway.... and most of the runway lights work at night.
