Hello Everyone;

I am a student pilot that will be relocating to Austin in the next month or so. Does anyone know of a good flight school or flying club in that area? I am going to try and finish up here prior to moving, but given my time table that may or may not be feasible. I should be able to find the time. All I lack is 1 hour of solo time and 1 hour of instrument time.

Thanks

Josh.

Josh, I've had good luck with Above and Beyond Aviation at Bergstrom and had one flight which was great with Genesis Flight Academy at Georgetown.

Welcome to Austin, need a real estate agent? Shameful plug. :)

Do whatever it takes to finish before you move. Your idea of the required time required will most likely be far short of actual if/when you start over at a new place. BTDT from both sides of the cockpit.

My wife was surprised by the lack of burnt orange. We are both K-State alum so she was concerned about being in Bevo country!

I'm working as an instructor part time in the Austin area as well. What kind of aircraft have you been using?

Ryan

I have almost 70 hours in the 172. 30 of which is Cross Country time.

When you're ready to put your toe in ownership water the best deal in central Texas is the Chandelle Flying Club.

As far as a good flight school, I think it would be impossible to beat Redbird Skyport in San Marcos (KHYI). If San Marcos is too far then Pilot's Choice at Georgetown is pretty good, I got my commercial and instrument ratings there.

I second Redbird. Top of the line facility and fantastic instructors!

I got my IFR ticket at Pilots Choice Aviation in Georgetown. That worked for me because I live just north of Austin.:wink2:

I fly with Above and Beyond Aviation out of Bergstrom. Solid aircraft and the instructors seem to be good. I've heard good things about Pilot's Choice in Georgetown. Been thinking about getting checked out there. We are in NW Austin and are about equidistant to both airports.

All the orange is out of town for summer. It will be back!

I knew where the Orange was, but I want to move to Austin so my wife can continue to believe it isn't that bad. :D We will have to go to the UT/K-State game. Hmmm... maybe not. I went to one K-State game last year.... and that was the Baylor game.

Longhorns I know have been hiding in a hole after getting beat down by Baylor the last two years.

As an Aggie, I hope they continue this tradition...Certainly helps us recruit.

Sorry for the derail :(

I got my Private Pilot License at Bergstrom in Austin back when it was still an Air Force base with a really good flying club. My instructor, Virgil Kennedy, who had been an Air Force instructor, stayed in the exact same place after the field went civilian and now has the Austin Academy of Aviation. I haven't flown with him in about 25 years, but he was a great instructor and I enjoyed his teaching immensely.

For the record, I am a Longhorn and try to keep below the radar these days. However, I did get a great picture with Mack Brown last year when I ran into him at the Hickory Airport!

Another Aggie here that won't ever tire of seeing the 'horns get beat by Baylor and K-State! (I'm about to marry into a KSU family too)

Oh yeah, Wayne has great advice... do everything within your power to finish your PPL at your current location, even if you have to fly back for a long weekend or something. You'll have to repeat a lot with the new outfit no matter who you choose. BTDT myself too.
