Which dotted line? This is what I see

Is it possible it was a projected path that got updated?

it's supposed to be the clearance route... but often its incorrect...
 
I see a dotted line over the city. But that is not the route I took. I wanted to see what it looked like with all the vectoring they had me doing.
 
I saw a dotted line when I checked it too.

No clue why.

What, exactly, is represented by the flight route line on a FlightAware map?

The solid line displayed on a FlightAware map is a connected series of points between every position report received for that aircraft. Generally, we receive a position every 30-90 seconds. However, in some cases (such as trans-ocenaic), position reports may be as infrequent as every 30-60 minutes.

The dashed line is the planned route of flight per air traffic control. Often times, a flight will deviate from the planned route due to weather, shortcuts, traffic, or other operational factors.

You won't see it after the flight completes. To see an example now, view a random flight:
