Boy oh boy, it's happening earlier each year. We're in for our first snow event and I'm not talking about a light dusting of snow. Apparently, the sh**show is starting tonight and will go on throughout tomorrow, totalling over 4 inches of snow. It's only October. I wasn't ready for this until mid/late November. Anybody got a spare room in Florida for us? lol...

We are getting a raw wind with a rain/snow mix here in NM this morning. Temps are forecast to start dropping this afternoon to the first freeze of the year, but started dropping right after sunrise. But so far no snow in the forecast.

It’s like that white stuff you have in front of the big body of water, just wetter, really cold and in general just yucky crap you don’t want to be around.

A buddy of mine was up at his place by Red Lake, ON last week. They got a bunch of mixed snow/rain while they were there. I believe it is supposed to be warmer there this week.

I actually miss living in northern Minnesota. It got cold but it was relatively dry there. Winters are too warm and wet for me in the central US. The moisture that lingers makes it feel colder than it did up north where it actually got cold, And it’s too cold to do outdoor activities like ride motorcycles but there’s not enough snow for snowmobiles or ski flying.

After reading previous posts I’m glad to be in Florida cold front and all.

My first flight instructor called it "white dirt."

Where is 'here' when referring to the ****show snowstorms?

Canadian Prairies. As my profile says, too far north. Looking at your profile, I used to call your area home a long time ago.

You people need to move south.

But not to Florida. Florida is too crowded. And the gators will eat your dogs. And the skeeters will eat you.

Not to worry. One of the happiest days in my life was seeing Florida in my rear view mirror... I didn't like it there because the weather was too constant...:lol:

Talk about skeeters ... the ones here in Carolina are large enough to have ticks on them!

The ones in Florida have been known to kill alligators. They carry them up about 30' into the air and drop them onto pavement.

The snow line here (for snow that stays) is at about 1000’ MSL. My house is at 575’. Puddles in the yard are frozen and don’t melt even on sunny days like today. Here comes another Alaska winter. My 56th. I know what it’ll look like. 14F6BAED-CA21-4B76-876E-8CB03E3DA9B5.jpeg

But go past NC. It’s hot and humid in the summers, 100 degrees and 100% humidity, so your body can’t cool off. In the winter it’s ice storms that bring down trees/power lines and leave you freezing in your own house with an inch of sheet ice on the roads. In between we get heavy pollen, hurricanes and and tornadoes. Not as many, but we also have alligators that will eat your dog. Also bears, which will eat either the alligator or you.

shoot, you haven’t seem then around here. Pokers as long as my leg. We take them down with deer rifles. Ribeyes of the sky.

I like winter. :dunno: any time I've moved, it's been to the north. I wouldn't mind going further North.

Same with North Carolina. it’s not far enough south but far enough to get hurricanes and mosquitoes. I hear there’s room in Alabama.

Eew hahaha I was stationed in Alaska and can say Alaska has the biggest and most mosquitoes I've ever seen. We always joked they were the state bird of Alaska. They are bad here in MS but AK I'm telling ya!

My BIL lives in WY and they had a ton of snow 2 nights ago all while we were sitting in 77 degree weather. Heck it gets too cold here in MS for my liking.

Louisiana might also be good, particularly around New Orleans.

Only missing volcanos and hurricanes from our natural phenomena bingo card, lol.

Wow... this morning we had our first freeze of the year and first measurable snow. Only a 1/2 inch, not enough to delay the schools this morning. But enough to be the earliest snow since I have lived in NM. This weeks lows will be low enough to make sure the heater in my well house is working properly.

I've heard that about Alaska - I was always confused about mosquitos there. I've always thought they got worse as you went further south on the continent, so I'm not sure what causes them to thrive there. I haven't spent time in AK, but the climate and landscape is similar to Iceland, no? And there aren't any mosquitos in Iceland.

I haven't had much luck shooting them with a deer rifle unless I can make a brain shot. Below is a picture of one of our Suwannee River variety mosquitoes. This is a juvenile, so it's possible something like a .30-06 might do the job, but once he's full grown it'll take something more suitable for an elephant, like a .577 Nitro Express. The last thing you want to do is shoot one with something too light and make the darned skeeter angry.

We just had our first skiff of snow in the area of Wyoming where I live, and I'm surprised that we didn't get it much sooner.
