Find a RV to learn before building

I have PPL, thought it's logical to test out a RV before thousand hours' commitment to build one, say RV10? But I wasn't able to find any RVs in Illinois to rent with instructor. Any suggestions?

Yes, it is logical to get some time in an RV before you make a commitment.

Technically, you can't rent an RV. You can pay someone who has his airplane registered for transition training and do transition training in that airplane with that person. Here is a partial list of people who are currently doing that kind of thing.

Beyond that, RV's are common as dirt these days. You can probably find an owner near you who'd be happy letting you fly some from the right seat. The payoff for that is Van's does have a referral program, so if you list that person as your referral when you buy your first kit, s/he will get a small czech from Van's.
 
I was going to be harsh, but @kyleb made the important points nicely.

Join an EAA chapter, meet some people, socialize it a bit, get some rides, even consider flying with a transition CFI.

The link I shared has multiple transition trainers, not just Alex... Several are closer to the OP than Alex is.
 
@kyleb - I was only pointing out that there is at least one non-current trainer listed. Since it's been at least 2 years I don't think the site is updated regularly.

It's a start, but I think joining VAF and asking there will prove more productive.

I should have put that in my original note.

Or, you could contact the factory and get a demo flight.
 
Just google Vans aircraft transition training and hopefully you'll find someone close. They are very forgiving aircraft and easy to fly. I had bought a 6 sight unseen and had to pick it up 200 miles away having never flown one.
 
Where in Illinois are you?
