As some of you may know I went to banjo camp this past weekend. One of the classes I took was on the music of Grandpa Jones. I always loved his music form when I was a kid watching Hee Haw. The teacher who taught this course happened to have played with Grandpa and lived with him and Romona for while. This is the 2nd Grandpa class I have taken from her and the stories are always good, the music excellent, and the chance to give a little life to one of the great Old Time musicians a welcome treat.

I thought I would share a non banjo Grandpa video with you though. Grandpa played guitar too as well as the cowbell. He considered himself really a singer but I think this shows how good he really was.

Scott...I thought of you last week. I saw a bumper sticker that said "Paddle Faster I Hear Banjo Music." :D

funny thing is you see acts like that cowbell on on shows like America's got Talent and others and they all get passed over or gonged as if it wasn't entertaining.

Well there is no accounting for taste. Remember this mega star?

The recording is not so great but these are two of the teachers I got to work with last weekend. On fiddle is Brad Leftwich, he is also a fine banjo player and documentor of Round PEak Style of play. The other is Ken Perlman who documents a lot of the Canadian maritime music. These guys have talent.

I grew up 'touring' on the weekends with my dad and the southern gospel quartet he sang with ("...Daddy sang bass..."). Most times, they were singing at po-dunk church potluck dinners, etc., but every once in a while we would end up at a Gospel Jamboree in Loretto (pronounced Low-retta), TN or revival down on Rabbit Trail Road (no joke). This 'big' events usually had at least one or two groups that had a fiddle and/or banjo. No such thing as 'classically trained', but man could they play!!

I took Rachel to see Alison Krauss a couple of years ago in Des Moines - if you want to see a stage chock-full of true musicians, you should check their show out!!

Off topic, but Chris, that is the best avatar...ever!

Took me a few minutes to figure out that it was a Rubic's cube on the back... THEN it made sense!!

Back on topic. I didn't know that Steve Martin played (plays?) the Banjo!
