http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/02/06/my-left-breast-put-fancy-tsa-scanner-to-the-test/

he motioned me out of the scanner and asked me to wait for word from someone in some secret room somewhere, someone looking at a vision of my body sans jeans, cardigan, turtleneck, etc. Hmmm . . .

Then she said she needed to check something. And she began sweeping her hands around my left breast and rib cage.

This didn't bother me all that much; in fact it made me smile. For one thing, I don't really have any feeling in my left breast. That's because it doesn't exactly exist. For six years now, it's been a composition of part of my lat dorsi (mid-back muscle) and a skin graft from my back, supplemented by a sac of silicone. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the result of a mastectomy and reconstruction, which in turn is the result of breast cancer.

Back to the TSA. As the security screening woman felt me up, I mentioned to her that I have an implant, the result of mastectomy. She relayed the information to those unseen through her microphone.

A few seconds later, she sent me on my way.
I guess we are going to get back to people having to be felt up to get on an airplane!

If these scanners cannot tell the difference between a breast implant and explosives, exactly why are we buying them?

[/FACEPALM]

Because it creates the illusion of safety for the masses.

That's not a waste of money! No way!

To be fair, a determination of "this thing is not like the other" is noteworthy. The purpose of these screening machines isn't to give the answer, so much as to sift through the passengers and pick out the ones who need further scrutiny.

True enough, but sadly, we don't have the machine yet which can divine the presence of malice and evil in passengers' minds, and absent such determination, the whole exercise is wasted motion.

LOL, from the thread title I thought you would be commenting on Carrie Prejean's engagement announcement...

So my mom (who also had breast cancer) needs further scrutiny?

That will be a very bad day for the TSA agent who decides to screen her.

Just how does the scanner tell the difference between a sac of fluid surgically implanted and a sac of explosive fluid stuffed inside a bra?

Gee thanks for giving the terrorists THAT idea. Now they're going to try to recruit porn stars.

How many liberties will we sacrifice in the supposed name of safety? So the thousands (probably more like hundreds of thousands) of people who've had fake body parts installed for whatever medical reasons are now supposed to be subjected to poking and prodding by a TSA agent every time they wish to fly? Let's just ban all commercial flight since we're so afraid of something going wrong.

The terrorists have won. This is a tremendous waste of time, money, and effort. And yes, I know this can happen to me because I've known multiple people who've been killed by terrorist attacks (all involving airplanes).

"Yes ma'am, your new D-cup is very nice. But you saw the sign on the wall over there. Liquids and Gels are limited to 3 ounces."

The conversation continues:

"Well, I guess there is a way we can let you through. But you will have to remove your bra and insert them into these quart ziploc baggies..."

I appreciate your commitment to accomodation of members of the travelling public.

Post encounter with TSA Boobies:

From this website:

"Breasts + nipple rings + pliers = TSA embarrassment

One of the more high profile stories involving the TSA this year, was an incident involving breasts and nipple rings.

While these 2 usually make for a steamy story that beings with "Dear Penthouse...", this incident was quite embarrassing for the TSA.

When Mandi Hamlin passed through the checkpoint, she set off the handheld metal detector wand. Instead of just asking for a manual search by a female agent, the male TSA agents decided it would much more fun to give Mandi a pair of pliers and demand that she remove her nipple rings.

Once Gloria Allred go involved, the TSA announced it would change the way it screens passengers with body piercings"

Or perhaps this web page describes the logic behind what the TSA is doing this.

Someone should remove their fingernails with said pliers. Slowly. Where do they recruit these people- in dark alleys?

Nope, prison release programs. See current Richmond Int'l/TSA battle. :mad2:

Sorry, couldn't resist.

That brings up a question I'm going to have to ask my wife's surgeon. What metals are in the new knee he just gave her this morning? Should be fun when we head for Cancun in April. :D

I can tell you from personal experince that most replacement parts are titiaum and won't set off the metal detectors.

Good. I know the screws in my left ankle haven't presented a problem over the years, but I suspect there's more metal in her new knee. Titanium is non-magnetic, so that should work.

Had an acquaintance that had some surgical metal for broken bones that would set off many of the metal detectors.

He would always quip to the TSA agent: "Sorry, I've been working out to the 'buns of steel' videos".

So, how is your friend enjoying his stay at Gitmo?

I thought TSA agents had their sense of humour surgically removed...
