What kind of memory technology is actually used in a CVR these days?

the theory is that conversations from, say, 18 hours ago aren’t usually of interest to an accident investigation

As mentioned earlier, it would require a 2nd regulation to erase the memory when full. By only recording the last 2 hours (or last 30 mins) the CVR keeps the pertinent information saved for an accident investigation and overwrites any other data automatically.

The newer ones use solid-state digital storage.
 
CVR aside, seems kinda obvious of what happened here.

No I’m not trying to cast stones, just saying.
 
So tower gave them instructions to taxi to 04L and hold short at K. And AA106 deviated from the instructions and runway incursion happened.

What else would need to be analyzed that could work on AA or the pilots favor? Either way they’re screwed.

I haven't looked up the regulation but more than two hours would likely be compliant, too, but the regulation sets the standard and that's what they're built to. The regulation used to be 30 minutes and then they were built to 30 minutes.
