I received a letter some 5 or 6 weeks ago stating the following:

Congress and the President have enacted the Aviation Investment and Reform Act... [that] requires the FAA to make airmen's addresses available to the public.

This site was given in the letter, but i can't seem to find the relevant info there.

You can opt to have your address omitted from this registry by replying by August 25.

Has anyone recieved this letter, and have you opted to leave your info out of the registry?

AIR Act
http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/hr1000/

and it is from 2005, again, nothing new.

Not later than 60 days after the date of the enactment of the Wendell H. Ford Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st Century, the Administrator shall develop and implement, in cooperation with representatives of the aviation industry, a one-time written notification to airmen to set forth the implications of making information concerning an airman available to the public under paragraph (1) and to carry out paragraph (2). The Administrator shall also provide such written notification to each individual who becomes an airman after such date of enactment.

Are you a new pilot/owner?

I am a student pilot, so this is all new to me. The text of the letter made it sound like it was part of a new regulation, so i was curious.

Up until a few years ago, the publicly available data included your social security number... which is what your pilots license number was composed of.

Those older disks are still out there. Pretty much any airman from before 2000 is susceptible to identity theft.

Ah ok.

Yep the airmen's registry is a public one. The FCC also publishes a registery of who has licenses. So if you have a ham radio license all your info is also public. The FAA airmen's registry can be viewed online, some people do restrict their information and as you ahve found out it is an opt-out type of function. Say nothing and your name/adress will be public. This is how places like Sporty's get your info to start sending you catalogs and such. Register an aircraft and you get different type of junk mail targeted towards airplane owners.

One of the reasons I choose not to publish my ham call sign in online forums that I use aliases
