Explain plane spotting to me

Wow... or someone's carrying a VIP... my security/risk management hairs on the back of my neck were standing straight up!!

They weren’t there just for us. They took pictures of everything that moved. You’d think that if they were that bored, they’d at least hang out together and talk.

They'll have a sheet of aircraft they're expecting to arrive and want a photo of. They'll also be watching a flight tracker and have an aircraft radio.

And yes, the airport security, at least in the US, chases away the spotters if they're not in a public viewing area. You can even be on a public road outside the fence under final and they'll shoo you away. My understanding is that it's a bigger hobby in Europe and security has more useful things to do.
