Saw these two guys when I landed in Eindhoven, Netherlands this morning. It was funny because they were at opposite corners of the parking deck. Obviously, they are arch rival plane spotters.

They weren’t there just for us. They took pictures of everything that moved. You’d think that if they were that bored, they’d at least hang out together and talk.
They'll have a sheet of aircraft they're expecting to arrive and want a photo of. They'll also be watching a flight tracker and have an aircraft radio.
And yes, the airport security, at least in the US, chases away the spotters if they're not in a public viewing area. You can even be on a public road outside the fence under final and they'll shoo you away. My understanding is that it's a bigger hobby in Europe and security has more useful things to do.
