The captain of an AirTran flight out of Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport was removed from the controls Wednesday and taken into custody by local police...

Newport News City Jail records, however, show that a 6-foot-4-inch 230-pound AirTran pilot was taken into custody at 7:18 a.m. Wednesday and charged with assault and battery. The pilot is identified in jail paperwork as Michael Wayne Karnath of Beaufort, South Carolina, a 57-year-old who was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1995 after 22 years of service.

:yikes:

Boy gonna be in a heap of trouble. Imagine being a captain on the no-fly list.

Don't say anything Cap, until the union lawyer is there.

(Another guy with a middle name of Wayne. They may have stopped a serial killer!)

The captain of an AirTran flight out of Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport was removed from the controls Wednesday and taken into custody by local police

Later in the article...
Newport News police spokeswoman Holly McPherson said the department did not take the captain into custody.

"We didn't make any arrests," McPherson said. "We had no involvement."

Any one else see anything conflicting about these two statements? Is the captain in custody? If so, by whom?
Bad reporting? DHS denial? Aliens?

Why, he was arrested by the TSA/DHS, of course. :D

Re: Ex-marine planning to take control of airliner arrested after fight with TSA agen

We have a couple pilots on the no-fly list, including one of our most senior CAs. It happens more than you'd think.

I'll be interested to hear what happened with this one.

Re: Ex-marine planning to take control of airliner arrested after fight with TSA agen

:) Yep- he was arrested by DHS...but who has him in custody? The part I quoted indicates the local police removed him from the controls too. The word "and" is a conjunction.

:)

Probably airport police. Assuming PHF is like ORF, they have an independent police force.

If it really was a confrontation with the TSA, I hope he put someone in the hospital. its like Indian Jones said about Nazis. "I really hate those guys".

WHAT DHS? They called in the FBI, Customs, Secret Service, Border Patrol? The TSA ain't got no arresting powers, other than the "Citizens arrest!" power that Gomer Pyle had.

Re: Ex-marine planning to take control of airliner arrested after fight with TSA agen

Thank goodness that the TSA protected us against getting an on time departure!

Read the article and the quote- the article indicated the local police arrested him and take him into custody and then later said the police didn't arrest him nor had him in custody.

I understand your statement- comment was on the contradiction. We don't know who really arrested him or is holding him.

Not true. Some TSA employees are in fact special agents with arrest powers - they're the ones with the guns. Generally they are in suit and tie, not in the screener-type uniforms.

Re: Ex-marine planning to take control of airliner arrested after fight with TSA agen

LOL and headpalm from Fark:

rcdl I was once taking a business trip for work and I showed them my government ID. It was the kind of ID that lets me into the building and is standardized across the entire government, not a drivers license or anything like that. When I went through the regular TSA people let me through but after I put back on my shoes one of the supervisors came up to me and asked to see my ID again. I showed it to him and he asked me if I had any "real ID". I told him that the ID in his hand was government issued with a photograph, it's probably more secure than even a passport or a drivers license. He told me I was a liar and if I didn't produce a real ID I would be detained. I pointed to the ID on his chest and said it's the same exact ID you have. He looked at his badge which said "TSA" and then at mine which said "FDA" and then asked me what the FDA was.

I just showed him my drivers license at that point, it was a lost cause.

Re: Ex-marine planning to take control of airliner arrested after fight with TSA agen

If the local airport police arrested him - which if he created a disturbance at a checkpoint would be their duty to investigate and arrest if need be - the Newport News City Police Department would have nothing to do with it.

And the Federal Air Marshal program resides in the TSA so yes some have arrest powers but I don't think they have anything to do with this.

Re: Ex-marine planning to take control of airliner arrested after fight with TSA agen

Hm. Well, he clearly got through the check point and nobody stopped him, so it can't have been a very serious incident there.

False arrest? I'd love to see that lawsuit....

Or he single-handedly bullied the TSA agents into submission for a few minutes?

Re: Ex-marine planning to take control of airliner arrested after fight with TSA agen

TSA's workforce is comprised of security professionals who work to ensure the safety of air travel

Sorry, I had to.

Re: Ex-marine planning to take control of airliner arrested after fight with TSA agen

And there has been no terrorists attacks using planes since then, so it must work. RIGHT?

Now you're being a Dick! :D

TSA probably took away his water.

That water could be made into a weapon!!

I understand that the TSA has reliable intel that bottles of water may actually contain a substance known as Ice-9. It appears to be just like water but could destroy large areas of this planet if unleashed. :yikes:

Or they were just thirsty.

The title of this thread seems awfully sensationalist, compared to what the news story says.

Even outside the federal air marshals, there are 1800 series folks in TSA who do criminal investigations. You'll know them if you meet them because they will be night-and-day more professional than the screeners.

Re: Ex-marine planning to take control of airliner arrested after fight with TSA agen

For those who have missed it in the past, see www.dhmo.org for the lowdown on this extremely hazardous chemical.

:D

And to substantiate the power of dhmo, there are some idiots claiming you can power a car with the stuff. All you have to do is separate the two elements that form it and then re-combine them in a fuel cell. Somehow they seem to have missed the part about taking more energy to separate the H from the O than you get when re-combining.

I think you are talking about the TSI's? Those guys don't carry weapons or have arrest authority despite being in the 1800 series. But they are more professional in my experience, except when they are hanging on pitot tubes to peek in the windows of big iron ;)

They also have OIG special agents but that is a whole 'nuther ball of wax.

My senior design project was over something like this. This company was claiming huge MPG increases on big diesel trucks if you installed their system that created the hydrogen through electrolysis on-board. No other modifications just plug this in and get 15% increases. We found through numbers and testing that you get something around a .0000002% increase. Combined with the ~30 amps it took to make the hydrogen I think they came up a bit short.

So, they might be more professional, but they have no clue what they're doing. Why am I funding these useless agencies and people again? It's like the Chicago Traffic Management Authority. They're even better than the TSA - their job involves standing at stop lights and waving cars through when the lights turn green. Job creation programs.... :mad3:

No, I believe they have 1811 special agents generally doing intel/investigative work. Not often around airports, these folks pursue suspected terrorists and other "threats to aviation security". A former DEA agent I worked with went over to TSA as an 1811, and I know he still has badge, gun and arrest authority. Perhaps he's out of the OIG, but I got the distinct impression he was in a limited group of field agents.

I'm sorry, but sometimes you can't help but laugh. Here it is:
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- An American Airlines pilot was cited for disorderly conduct Wednesday after allegedly threatening to chop off the head of a TSA security agent.
City prosecutor Marty Conboy said the pilot and agent apparently had an argument and the pilot referred to an ax on the plane that could be used to behead the agent. Exactly what happened was still under investigation.
The pilot was cited and released, police Sgt. Cathy Cook said.
American Airlines would not identify the pilot and spokeswoman Julia Bishop-Cross said only that the airline was investigating.
The flight to St. Louis left 90 minutes late with another pilot.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- An American Airlines pilot was cited for disorderly conduct Wednesday . . . .

Just to be clear, that was an incident from 2003. The exact quote was "I have an axe" referring to the crash axe in the cockpit. Nothing came of the incident.

Yeah, that Ice-9 is dangerous stuff. Thank Bokonon they haven't used it!!!!!

Re: Ex-marine planning to take control of airliner arrested after fight with TSA agen

Here's my version of what happened, extrapolating from the very thin fact set and my experience with TSA and small people in general:

TSA agent got lippy because Cap had toothpaste in excess of 3 oz. Cap sez, "Keep it. You can shove it up your ass." Cap being 6'4" ex-Marine, and the TSA agent being a left-of-bell-curve living-with-mom-and-dad-at-age-45 spending-all-his-time-on-line-playing-fantasy-role-play-games loser, lets him pass. As soon as Cap is through, and out of sight, TSA loser calls his superior (who graduated from community college with a C- in Law Enforcement) and reports a dangerous person masquerading as an airline Cap. TSA sprints to gate, arrests pilot, thus preserving the security of the Homeland and delaying suffering passengers for 3 hours. Mission Accomplished!!!!!!

Given that the TSA and locals are tight-lipped and releasing NO details about the incident, I would tend to agree. The TSA is quick to promote their "achievements" - the fact that they have not done so, and that they've even refuse to answer questions is indication enough that the true facts would embarass them. In true government form, you bury unfavorable news with secrecy.

From what I can tell, this has been done in a way that even the citation was kept from the public record.

I also find it very interesting that the mouthpiece for AirTran is formerly one of the spokesholes for TSA.....

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Where did you get the inside information?

You forgot the part where Cap THREW the toothpaste at the agent thus the charge of assault.

YOU WILL RESPECT MAH AUTHORITAH!
