Everything Offends Me
What a great month for the challenge! This last month, we received 63 new claims, all of them new. Remember, we can submit visits for airports that have already been claimed, so if you're at an airport, just snap a photo and submit it! We now have a total of 2394 claims, 149 visits, for a total of 2538 airport reports in the database.

We got a bunch of claims for Alaska, started the nomination for Picture of the Month (results will be coming soon), and got 48 new pilots to sign up. We currently have approximately 600 pilots that have registered, although some of those are inactive and have never submitted a claim. I'll try to get a more realistic number of users for the next report.

Some states are soooo close to being 100% done, I'd like to see if we can knock them out in September: Maryland has 3 remaining (1W3, KCBE, and W35, all within 30nm of each other...in fact, 1W3 and KCBE are .6nm from each other!), Michigan has 2 remaining (4M4 and 7MI - 81nm apart), and California has 4 remaining (L04, L78, A28, and KPMH) spread across the state.

States with the lowest participation are Hawaii (since we just started in Hawaii, this makes sense), Louisiana, Alaska (but this is starting to come up quickly), North Dakota and South Dakota (surprising, with UND being up there).

Thanks everyone for the great participation. Below are some details on the claims last month:

Its a fun little challenge, where you log a claim of "ownership" over every airport that you visit before anyone else. You plant the flag by taking a picture with the words "Operation: Fly" visible somewhere in it (usually by holding up a piece of paper with it on it, or some other means). You then login to http://www.operationfly.com and stake your claim.

If you go to an airport that has already been claimed, you can log a visit to the airport with the picture and any information you want to include.

There's a lot of new features that will be coming shortly, but that's the gist of it now. This was a challenge that Chip Gibbons and I ran a few years ago, but we discontinued in 2008. I took the data we had, restored it and relaunched the challenge in July.

Its fun, and its a good way to get out and meet people and see airports that you wouldn't have gone to for any other reason.

And its free!

To get started, go to http://www.operationfly.com/claim.pdf and download the claim pdf and print it (or make your own), go to http://www.operationfly.com/reports/airportMap or http://www.operationfly.com/reports/airportList to view which airports around you are available, and start flying!

The only real rule is that you can't claim your home airport. Also, the photo must contain the key phrase "Operation: Fly" (or Go Fly America for those that choose those words instead), and must be taken from the ground, at the airport.

Some of the stuff in Colorado will never be claimed. The runways are in too poor a shape at a couple of the "airports" listed. You'd need a serious backcountry aircraft and be willing to risk it.

But there's plenty left to claim that aren't that bad... ;)

Actually, that reminds me that I need to have a "report bad airport" option so that we can remove airports that will never be claimed. One such airport is M10 in Mew Mexico...I've landed there. I will never land there ever again.

Granted, CA has many airports and it is a large state, but I'm pretty sure KPMH is not in CA. Perhaps you meant PMD?

Well, Airnav does try to warn you:

"RWY 08/26 INFREQUENT MAINTENANCE MAY BE HAZARDOUS; RECOMMEND VISUAL INSPECTION PRIOR TO USING."

But someone may be doing the challenge in a helicopter. Does it say "fixed wing aircraft" in the rules. :)

:D

Sort of (from the FAQ):

What criteria did you use for selecting airports?

The airports on the list are the airports listed by the Federal Aviation Administration as Public Use airports. Heliports were removed because they do not hold a suitable length for most fixed wing airplanes to land at, while helicopters can certainly land at and claim an airport. Private Use airports were removed because it is simply too difficult to determine which airports are truly off limits. Military airports were removed because most of them have restrictions on what kind of insurance policy is required before prior permission can be granted.
