Are your POP/SMTP ports blocked? You can use POP with Gmail. Of course you'd need to setup outlook express or another mail client on your work PC.

Thats the problem, anytime i try to go to a webbased email site i get blocked from even accessing. I was thinking maybe a java based email might work that i could install on the comp and that would provide me with a new email but im yet to find one.

They have the sites on the block list at the web proxy.

There's nothing you can do about other than ask your chain of command for a more reasonable policy ...or get a mobile phone with net access, which you can also use to get online with a (personally owned!) laptop, until they ban that by policy. That's my plan, although I have heard the bannition of that is also being done in some places, even if you make it clear that you're not touching the company's network.

The point is they don't want you slacking off. Get to work! he says, on his company PC....

They probably have all domains blocked with "mail" in them. My buddy ran into the same thing at his office. So I just set him up with an e-mail address at our facility - which doesn't have a "mail" in it.

It's not just slacking off. The real problem, one my company experienced when POP3 was available, then with webbased, is the computer illiterate user who opens a virus filled email and infects the entire company. Rather than spend the time educating people, they unilatterally shut down mail services. You also have to remember if they are blocking them (usually a service they bought), they are probably also monitoring web addresses.

Which is exactly what I have to do now.

For the most part, everyone pretty much does their job and occasionally checks their mail, etc.. Unfortunately, because a few idiots seem to make a career out of it and hog a bunch of bandwidth downloading non-business related stuff, I have to now monitor who is using what and why. Bandwidth is a precious commodity for small businesses that run on VPNs between multiple offices. I just added a second T-1 to our office to improve the quality of service I deliver ot our other offices.
