Which cylinder runs hottest (I’m assuming #4, but hearing it's maybe #3) on a 1970 Cherokee 180E with a 0-360-A4A?

I’m installing a single probe EGT/CHT gauge and want to install it on the cylinder most likely to run hottest.

#3 cylinder is directly in front of the oil cooler hole, and as a rule, runs hottest. Everything depends on weather. I have the 180D with the same engine.

Isn’t the probe location specified in the aircraft specs?

Not a Cherokee but my A4M #3 is hottest with oil cooler behind #4 cylinder.

This isn’t typically instrumented on these airplanes originally so, no. But, I seem to recall Piper putting out a bulletin with what cylinder was recommended. I’ll see if I can find it. Edit: It is Piper SErvice Letter 486A

For what it’s worth, #3 seems to generally be the hottest regardless of oil cooler configuration on these engines.
