Eggnog

Skip the eggnog, serve the whiskey.
 
Most years I make a highly caloric and very alcoholic eggnog from scratch. Stuff turns out like a strong mixed drink. I've even made ice cream from it. The stuff they sell at the grocery store you can skip, it really doesn't qualify.
 
Not a fan, and not a fan of fruitcake either. My FiL loves the stuff, I have a few Claxton fruitcakes sent to him right before Christmas.

Love that stuff. Wife used to make a good one but I told her not to anymore because I'm about the only one who would eat it, and stopped eating that stuff a few years ago.

Now pumpkin I will eat! I mean healthy right, pumpkin? ;):)

Way back in the day here in Atlanta when I was in band in grammar school and jr high we used to sell Claxton fruitcakes as fund raisers at Christmas. I like the cake itself, but there's too much fruit and not enough cake. If the ratio was better of more cake than fruit I would like it. My mother loves it.
 
I'll admit to liking the fruitcake.

In my house I'm also the only one who likes pumpkin and mince pies. The compromise is pecan pie.
 
Of course everyone here knows that all fruitcakes were made over 200 years ago. They just keep getting passed around from family to family....

This is a false claim promulgated by stuffy elitists who refuse to experience all that the world might offer in terms of ethanol distillation.
 
Good fruitcake has sadly been over-run by some factory pressed abomination passed off here as the original. I think proper fruitcake possibly originated in England? Mom made it with currants, cherries, cloves other delectables, and it would steep in juice in my closet for months before Christmas. Then my sister started making flaming brandied pudding which sort of overshadowed anything after that!

There is an element of truth to that. I actually like fruitcake, but if one considers how many times they have likely been regifted, one might pause.

BTW, fruitcake wars are a thing in my latest action adventure novel (not yet published.)
 
If you haven't had homemade fruitcake, you haven't really tried fruitcake. It doesn't take long to make. What takes time is a two week slow bath with a brandy solution and then a 2 week mellowing.

A wise man once told me that you should never go cheap on the Three Ws: wiper paper (because toilet starts with a t,) women & whisky. I’m pretty sure when he said ‘whisky’ there was no ‘e’ in it. <shrug>
 
Fruitcake is good in my opinion. Fruitcake dipped in whiskey or Jamaican rum is better.
 
Between fruitcake and figgy pudding, which one is worse?
 
I like eggnog - can't drink too much of the stuff, but I enjoy a cup around the holidays. Haven't thought to put booze in it though - perhaps I'll give that a try this season. :)
