Perhaps they'll find a unicorn or two, or the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Those are as likely as finding any remnants of Amelia.

Au contraire. Ballard is drawing off TIGHAR's work. That will mean that TIGHAR will herald this from all corners, gain publicity, and thus prove why folks should give them money for some other jaunt. And they may work it to get paid directly by NatGeo for use of their work....
 
BTW, I just looked, it's already on TIGHAR's site. Along with this statement: "TIGHAR will not be officially participating in the expedition but we have reached an agreement with National Geographic for TIGHAR's assistance in the production of the two-hour television special 'Expedition Amelia.' "
 
Maybe he will discover evidence that God smote her.

I stand corrected. I was sure (without checking of course!) that something in the acronym referred to the Pacific. Glenn Miller would work but I suspect the English Channel is not as big a draw to go dive in. (Nor to visit in the winter.)

But the accommodations ashore are much, MUCH nicer.

What's more interesting here is if Ballard follows TIGHAR's suggestions and doesn't find a blessed thing. TIGHAR would have a hard time, afterwards, trying to fund additional searches in the same area. Any claims of finding evidence elsewhere will probably result in even more skepticism. Might have to give up looking for Earhart entirely. Even if they switch focus to Miller, Leslie Howard, Roald Amundsen, etc., their credibility is going to be hurt. In addition, few other names are as "bankable" as Earhart.

Yep. While being able to tout Ballard on their web page "Dr. Ballard endorses TIGHAR" is nice for now, I think they'll have killed the goose that lays the golden eggs once the dust settles.

Yeah, the South Pacific sounds much better than the channel.

Agreed this will likely put an end to TIGHAR’s expeditions, unless they find the plane. That would tend to boost their credibility for other adventures. If Ballard doesn’t find it, I doubt anyone will care about TIGHAR’s next trip down there.

Nah. I think you underestimate the number of people who seem to care not one whit whether the “search” is for real or just some wild fantasy. Check the History Channel and see the ways in which the Lagina brothers have been able to earn their living for years now. Or Josh Gates... has that guy ever actually found anything?

Someone has said it here before. I don’t want to be a pessimist, but I just don’t think we’re going to reach her in time.

IMO, the place to look is W/NW of Howland Island, but what are the odds of finding a single 80 year old airplane in an indistinct part of the Pacific?
 
While I highly doubt that they’ll find her, I wouldn’t be startled if they did. They’ve spent enough time and money on it.
