I am looking for a good wine app for my droid. What I would really love is to scan the bar code of the bottle and have that look up the particulars and then store that in a database of wines that I have drunk along with comments that I write about the wine. Later I could print out or view that database.

Anyone have any thoughts?

The few I have seen make me type in all of the info and I don't want to do that at all. Don't even suggest an app if it can read the bar code of the wine.

I'm sure the AOPA wine club is working on this instead of the droid version of the Airports Directory that has been "Coming Soon" for over 4 months.

Wine by the bar does precisely this.

And its free.

Edit: Also, Beer Free does something similar as well.

Ah, come on. You're drinking wine that was bottled after they came out with bar codes? It probably has screw tops, too! :goofy:

Screw tops and plastic corks are good things these days. It helps to prevent the wine form oxidizing. You are finding more and more of them on up scale wines.

Agreed, but you won't find them on a 30 year old bottle.

I was in Switzerland a few years back (Lausanne) and they had screw caps on pretty much all the wine bottles. My host explained they tended to dringk the wine the year it was bottled:dunno:

I just wish it all came in the box/bag. It's pretty annoying that it's hard to find a decent wine in box form even though the box is a better way to distribute IMO.

There are a few better box wines out there now. Never get Franzia!!

Here is an old discussion on the different brands http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/365922

Another advantage to distribution is that it keeps the wine fresher by reducing air in contact with the wine.
