Things a pilot should know but does it anyway. Pushing the plane back in it's spot by pushing on the spinner, low tire pressure will tear the valve stem off if you stand on the brakes and the tire slips on the rim. Too much oil fill to 8 qts in a 8 qt system, oil over the bottom of the plane. Bugs on the leading edge of the wings too much trouble to clean off will cost you 5 to 10 kts. The only time you have too much gas in when you are on fire so fill it to the top, we are just a little overweight and this plane if you can fit it in will fly. It's just a little frost on the wings. any other good ones.
 
Yeah, I did 3 landings just before you got here.

EDIT - Not that I have ever done that, just what I've heard at the airport.
 
Yep, looks like if I'm alone in the plane, I can fill it up and not be overweight. And look at that, the runway at my home drome is still long enough. Glad I checked those AGAIN.

Are you quoting the 5-10 knots due to bugs from personal experience or anecdotal?
 
Bug residue adds approximately 5-10 lbs to a typical GA plane.
 
Are you guys saying “bug residue” or “bung residue?” I can’t hear with all these flies buzzing around..,
 
The only time I carry full fuel is when I'm tankering cheap fuel or I need full fuel for a long cross country. I feel like carrying all that extra weight around is performence waste.
 
A 6 ply tire will last longer than a 4 ply.
 
2-ply toilet paper lasts a lot longer; use both sides.

Yeah about that standing on the brakes thing with under-inflated tubes. I darn near greased my landing and this was my reward. Brakes were not involved at the time. The adage should be "a visual check to verify your tires are properly inflated is an expensive mistake you won't soon repeat." dolly.JPG stem.jpg

A guy spent many years as a test pilot for Mooney spoke at a Mooney seminar last fall. He said that cleaning and waxing the leading edge can be good for 2 to 3 knots. I doubt it would do much of anything for my ragwing Cessna.
 
A lot of the world use a bucket of water and left hand, wipe paper on your but is unthinkable.

They do totally reduce a zoom climb by like 13.7 percent.

I don't think anyone said the bugs were dead. Live bugs increase the zoom climb by 13.8%.

And why can't I do the zoom climb thingy. I might as well sell my plane. :-(

Well, I guess you can do the zoom climb thing if your plane is cool and you don't wear a patched up leather bomber jacket from WrightBrothers in the summer and tassel loafers with no socks.

Awesome! My plane is very cool, I don't own any leather jackets or tassel loafers, and unless I'm on the beach, I'm wearing socks.
 
Bugs have 0 effect on my Bonanza. Where did you get the 5-10?
When they build their nests in the pitot tube they do. I had a "priority return" situation when suddenly I realized I had a few passengers onboard. In the climb I was greeted by a few yellow jackets buzzing around... fantastic. Fly the airplane... don't worry about them. Managed to get on the ground without getting stung. So I guess don't lose your cool and freakout when unintended passengers are onboard!

100 lbs over gross probably won't kill you, adds maybe 1 knot to stall speed.

Maybe say something pithy about beng outside of the CG range? Too far aft and you are daft?

I saw the results of a Beech 99 starting and the start cart was parked in front of the engine. I am not sure what was the bigger loss, the start cart or one engine and prop on a B-99.

Don't fly so low when spotting moose that the swarm of bugs you fly through covers 90% of the windshield. Don't ask how I know that one..:rolleyes:
 
Low tire pressure can also exacerbate the "Cessna wobble", and cause some fretting during landing in windy conditions.
