Well,... looks like I might not be able to fly this weekend. Just got a notice that there is a TFR scheduled for the Obama train tour to DC, with a stop in Philadelphia about 10am Saturday. I was scheduled to have my Diamond DA-20 Checkout flight from 9am-12noon. :frown2:

Our field is within the 30nm ring of the TFR, so looks like I'm not flying Saturday. :frown3: The Philadelphia TFR is 0930-1200, and then there is this 3nm width as the train moves down through Wilmington and to Baltimore/Washington.

Be safe out there Saturday with this moving TFR.

Prefacing this with not having read this particular TFR, but...

If you're outside the 10NM inner ring typical of presidential TFRs, you can fly as long as you're talking to ATC and possibly have a squawk code. File a flight plan to an airport outside the 30NM ring, open it on the ground so you have the squawk code, and go. It's not an instructional flight, so the provision precluding instruction doesn't apply. Be sure to have a flight plan for the return portion too!

Checkout flight usually means instruction.

The solution is to book another hour, take the plane outside the TFR, and do your training, and go back in.

That moving TFR is going to be a real CF as it will essentially block east-west air traffic over a LARGE swath of the mid-Atlantic.

I am so glad that I live where I do. I had much rather put up with Indian uprisings, than Presidential TFRs.

But that's ATC workload permitting.

When Bush was in Phila for the Army/Navy game the TFR stated that flights to/from airports in the 10 -30 nm ring are permitted with a flight plan and squawk code but a friend of mine called Phila Approach ahead of time to ask about the likelyhoold of getting a clearance out of the TFR and was told that they wouldn't be giving clearances once the TFR was effective. I heard they also were denying entrance into the TFR even to aiplanes on flight plans.

File IFR.

I've never had one refused when on IFR. And it's routinely granted with VFR. I'm betting that Chicago will be another kettle 'o fish.

IFR flights would be allowed out, but I'm a VFR pilot under instruction for the checkout, and the TFR states no Flight Training. LOM is also under the 30nm ring then it moves to Deleware when he is supposidly picking up Joe Biden before continuing on. So, even though I can't fly after noon for family reasons, it would be under the next TFR as well.

Ah well,.. I rebooked for Saturday the 24th in the afternoon. I did notice that it is still light out after work now,... so maybe I'll squeeze in a flight next week for a quick refresh before the full checkout. We'll see.

We were planning to file IFR to/from an airport in the 30 mile ring when the ARMY/NAVY TFR was in effect, but Philly told us they wouldn't be giving IFR clearances.

I can't believe the size and "moving" portion of this TFR

For the Army/Navy TFR I had the flight plan filed when I left nantucket, got my squawk code and was on my way to KILG when Allentown Gave me the "Archer 679er I have bad news for you". It all did work out and we got into Wilmington with out much delay at all, maybe 5-10 minutes. I have the ATC recording on the blog....http://gmflightlog.blogspot.com/2008/12/nantucket-tfr-finally-home.html

No, the airplane is not certified for flight under IFR, therefore you cannot accept an IFR clearance. Accepting an IFR clearance is a contract to do what ATC says (and YES there are exceptions), and that includes flying in IMC.

You CAN train for the IFR rating in it as long as the training is done under VFR.

I'd start to rant and rave about the idiocy of these TFRs, but I'm too tired of it all to bother any more.:frown2:

I *hope* that you let AOPA know. And various political animals. It the NOTAM authorizes it, there is NO reason they should deny it. It's done all the time in other places.

:frown2: updated graphics,... with all these going on, and crossing over one another,... how many pilots do you think will bust these this weekend?
