Have you ever met someone that shared in the same kind of adoration of aviation? As a friendship that took off from day one? I know that people fly for all sorts of reasons. It is fun, the status of it, and so much more. I have met many pilots in my day, but I can only think of one that we really understood each other when it comes to flying.

Captain Vega and I would have daily adventures at the airport. We would check out various towers, practice maneuvers and ILS approaches, going to fly-ins, flying to so many airports, and raiding their refreshments area. We were the cookie monsters. There was one airport in West Houston, were we would watch aviation movies till we got tired then flew home. He was a hell of a pilot. Very professional in all aspects. We would show up at 6 a.m. sharp at the flight school and read our books and have study sessions till the sun went down. Every single day. Rain or shine. He and I understood eachother 100% when it came to airplanes. Now we are states away, and it is kind of sad. I will never forget him, and wish him the best in his career. I don't think I will ever meet anyone like him that loves aviation the way he does.

It is cool to hear of unique friendships. Tell me your story.

nope. well, unless you count the monkey.

Met my spouse on the AOPA web boards December of 1999. Met in person in January 2000. I would say that it was love at first sight, but that's kinda corny. But.....Sold my house in SoCal and moved to Washington state May of 2000. He wore out an engine in his Stinson in those months, coming down for almost weekly visits. We share more interests than aviation... motorcycles, gardening, traveling, food, music.

Looking at your pic I would like you to be my mate.

Soul mate that is.

Aww that is so sweet! How do you like Washington? That is my home state.

Ouch... I was complimentary to you (and helped you in the past). You maybe need to gain a bit of sense of humor..

There was a man who was my boss and introduced me to flying. More of a mentor than a soulmate. In addition to flying, we were in the same career. He probably shaped my adoration of flight. I don't spend a lot of time with other pilots, but in the general population, I rarely find a person who comes close to understanding the passion I inherited from him.

Then there is my pilot wife who responded to my online dating site profile that said, "Come fly with me." ;)

Actually it was Birch Bay, just south of Blaine. Dad was stationed at an Air Force early warning radar station there.

Do you have an aviation soulmate? Are you gay? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I am not sure who you are talking to, but I clearly stated "he" several times. By looking at my photo, it is clear that I am a woman. One does not have to be in a sexual relationship to be "Aviation Soulmates." They could be the same or opposite gender. It is just two people that think alike reguarding aviation. An intellectual connection.

That would be the sausage fest of all sausage fests. 17:1 male:female pilot ratio.

Movies at an airport in West Houston? Was it by chance in the theater room at West Houston Airport? Lol

If you go there only looking for a date perhaps. Though you could just meet someone to open a flight school or perhaps even an airliner with.

Add long as I've been based here, that's the one room I've never been in.
You are missing out. Go in the night time when no one is there. That room has the perfect setting to watch old WWII movies about Avenger's in. Such comfortable seats as well.

I think I might! The VIP room with the magic electric recliners usually attracts me first, though... Or the airplane.

I guess if platonic soulmates count, that would be my best friend. We learned to fly at the same time (not together) and have done a lot of flying together since then.

My wife, Mary, and I have been flying together for 22 years. I got my ticket in '94, she got hers in '98. (Our son got his in '07.)

We have taken our love of aviation so far over the top that we have made our living owning and operating aviation-themed hotels since 2002. Why? Because we wanted to hang out with pilots all day, and we knew there was no way to make money in aviation! lol

Our current hotel, Amelia's Landing, is on an island in the Gulf of Mexico -- one of the most beautiful areas in the world to fly.

I am probably more obsessed about flying than she is -- but she's not too far behind me! It's been a wonderful life.

:D

Nope, but not for lack of trying.

Back to the original question:

Definitely have met a significant number of people afflicted with the aviation illness at least as bad as I am. Some worse.

Get along absolutely great with roughly ten.

Three or four that I'd tell em where the bodies are buried. Haha.

Some of the ten hang around here, most don't.

Any of the ten, a simple phone call to ask a "stupid" aviation oriented question turns into a marathon of catching up on other aviation and life things that usually ends only because someone's bladder isn't gonna take it much longer. Haha.

Need to figure out how to go do those sessions in person more often and less on the phone, honestly.
