Do Not Try This At Home

That is some nifty helo flying. Be patient and wait for the right set of waves.

Surf is definitely "up".

Something for you to look forward to on your checkride?

Hundreds of millions of dedicated military technology... plus a Garmin on the glare shield. Whatever it takes to get the job done.

I think that represents what my grandson's peers would refer to as "mad skilz."
Very impressive.

2 L's in skillz, old-timer...

EDIT: ..and perhaps 2 D's as well...but my ebonics be a bit rusty, yo.

Technically, it's "skillez". Looks like I need to skool the both of y'all.

Although I applaud your use of the word "skool", I have to disagree, good Sir, with regards to your spelling of "skillez." There is, in fact, no E.

Since Dennis mentioned "grandson's peers", I assume all spelling is out the window. That ship has sailed. No manners, no spelling, no taste. At least they know how to text while driving!

To get back on topic, I wonder if the pilot was hovering as some training practice or whether he was analyzing the wave pattern and patiently waiting for a break (and got lucky).

I don't know about that, but it sure looks like have gave it full Down collective after touching. The gear oleos are fully compressed.

The Lynx can go into sub min pitch (negative pitch) to plant in solidly on the deck. Lots of mast stress though.

No doubt.... The biggest danger looks to me like the blades will deflect downward and chop off someones head...:dunno::dunno:.....

He also deployed the harpoon about a second or so after touchdown. You can see it between the right main and the nosewheel.

Yep, from what I understand they rarely use negative pitch. Not even sure they used it in this vid. Blades do seem to flex down a bit after landing though.

Patience paid off! I'm sure the view from inside the chopper would confuse me initially.... ship itself was providing a false horizon.

I am having doubts on your qualifications to represent the LBC.

Harpoon? Some sort of lock down device?

The collective doesn't go to negative thrust as far as I know. Gravity takes over at that point at the point of full down collective, but you are correct a full down collective is mandatory after landing.

The Lynx and its predecessor the Wasp, both have the capability to go into negative pitch producing downward thrust. Helps for a pitching deck under large swells. Does create some mast stress so they don't use the capability much.

I've seen that vid before, but not in HD. I get sea sick just watching that...

:vomit:

Even in pretty bad seas, if you wait long enough (as he did) you're likely to get a flat spot due to wave cancellation effects.
