While driving, that is... on an iPhone running iOS 11.4.1. Complaint: it doesn't work. Spam calls come through as readily as if DND wasn't activated. I had one just yesterday while I was trying to listen to NPR on the car radio. Yes, I was driving, about 35 mph. When I stopped to block the spammer, of course I got the usual pop-up telling me that I would not receive notifications while driving, and I had to click the box that says "I'm not driving" before I could unlock the phone. WTF? Obviously it knew I had been driving, but it let the bleeping spam call through. :mad2:

Anyone else had this happen under iOS?
 
If I don’t recognize the caller, I just let it ring.
 
Never had any type of driving restrictions on mine before, so that’s a new one for me.

I also don’t answer the call if I don’t recognize it. If it’s someone who’s actually trying to reach me, they can leave a message and I’ll call them right back.

Folks, I don't answer the phone if I don't recognize the caller ID. I didn't answer this one either, I glanced at the phone on the car seat, saw that it was a spam and quickly declined it. That isn't the problem. The call (any call) is supposed to be blocked in DND mode and come up later as a missed call. That's the way it (usually) works if I turn on DND manually - though I've had spam calls come through even then, just not as "reliably". When it's auto-enabled while driving, it does absolutely no good at all, they come right through at the same rate as if it was off, and the message when I tried to unlock it proves that the phone had correctly deduced that I was driving, so it's not as if it was a sensor failure.

Did you have bluetooth on? Under the DND while driving activation button it says, "Limit notifications while driving. Incoming calls will be allowed when iPhone is connected to Bluetooth or a hands-free accessory." I never activate this feature, but I understood it only blocked texts. I have texted someone with this feature on, and I get a message saying they're driving.

I never turned that feature on, I don’t get the point. Just don’t answer the call, hit the decline button.
 
I have a phone so that I can call people at weird times, not the other way around

I'll bet that's the answer. Yes, reading it more carefully, that's what it says. I misunderstood that part too, since the list of options for DND while driving has a specific option for DND when connected to Bluetooth. I thought that disabled incoming calls even when connected to Bluetooth, but apparently that's not the way it works. Looks like I'm going to have to disable bluetooth too then, which sucks because sometimes I do like to talk to friends from the road with the hands free setup.

Even though my car radio/bluetooth has a button for "Decline call", that button does the same thing as the "Answer call" button does, i.e. it answers the call. There is no way to decline a call in the car without touching the phone. And the bluetooth display on the radio doesn't reliably display caller ID either. So the only way I can properly screen out spam calls while driving is if I keep the phone on the seat next to me and look at it, then decline the call on the phone if it's spam. Not something I like to do, though I did it this time. If the phone is in my pocket, I have to just let it ring and miss what is being said on the radio until it stops. That's not acceptable either. :mad:

There is no hands-free decline button in my car. Or rather there is, but it answers the call instead of declining it. My only options are to get the phone out if it isn't already out, or let it ring. Don't want to do either if the radio is on (I listen to NPR).
 
Go into the Do Not Disturb menu, and check a few things.

  1. Under the SILENCE section do you have it clicked as Always or While iPhone is locked? If it is on while locked, you WILL receive texts and calls while do not disturb is on if the phone is unlocked. Were you using maybe Apple maps or Gmaps for nav?
  2. Futher down is Repeated Calls. If this is on, any call repeated within three minutes of the first call will be put through.

It is While Phone is Locked, but the phone was locked, as it always is. I almost never use the phone for maps or nav. I'm going to switch it to Always though, just in case. Repeated Calls is off.

Everskyward had the right answer: The While Connected to Bluetooth option just means that you don't have to be moving to activate DND. DND does not stop incoming calls when connected to bluetooth and there is NO OPTION to make it do that.

So there is no workable way I can use hands-free call answering in my car. Thank you, Apple. Thank you, GM. :(

Mistake #2 is living in a Nanny State.
 
If I really don't want to be bothered I either mute the phone or turn it off. Works wonderfully.

With my phone, this doesn't work if it's connected to bluetooth in the car. It just won't ring, but it will silence the radio and prompt you to either answer or decline (and decline is impossible without touching the phone).

It's pretty clear the only solution is to deactivate bluetooth.
 
Don’t answer the phone ,if they are not on my contact list,then I check for a message. However they are starting to leave messages,how aggravating.

Yep, I had one like that yesterday while I was hiking. When I got back in cell range, there was a voicemail, the usual "threatening" voice that tries to impersonate the IRS, asking me to call them back at an 844 number.

I seem to get calls twice a week from a firm in Atlanta telling me that I have such good credit I should use their business to lower my interest rate. I finally figured out my credit card companies were sharing information about me. So a quick call to my card companies and had them eliminate all data sharing on all my accounts. Hoping that will cut back on these annoying phone calls?

Same here. Infuriating to be listening to music or radio through my phone via Bluetooth and have it cut out by one of these spam calls.
 
Hm...I rarely have the cell phone on, so it's never a problem for me. Even if it is on, it's probably in my bag in the backseat and there's no way to reach it.
 
I'm sure that 99% of the US population would support a complete ban on robocalls... if only there was a congresscritter with the balls to sponsor such a bill.

I'd support a law not only doing that but also eliminating junk mail, placing flyers under windshield wipers, and door-to-door solicitations/sales, etc.

When you say "not on", do you mean turned off with a hard shutdown? Because that's the only way to be 100% certain that a call won't come through on my iPhone 7.* Just shutting it off with the power switch does absolutely nothing but make it go to sleep until the next call comes in.

*Although lately, since the Verizon store did a factory reset on it, airplane mode seems to be working pretty well.

Not only off, but shutdown, and most of the time, not even with me. I really hate cell phones because far too many people are wandering around with their heads down into the cell phone and not paying attention to cars, other people, potholes, broken concrete on the sidewalks, etc.

I get similar calls but haven't had a mortgage for 10 years. Don't know where they get the data
