Hello gents,

I come to you with a somewhat strange question. My wife as tasked me with building some shelving/hanging space/drawers in an existing walk-in closet that currently just has some hanging rods and shelving around the perimeter of the closet. I have been looking at various assemble-yourself closet systems, but given the particular dimensions of the space, I think it would be better if I build it myself. The issue i'm having is not knowing where to go to find the melamine boards needed to piece this thing together. The places I've looked so far (IKEA, HomeDepot, Lowes, etc all sell closet kits, but not the individual pieces. Do any of you guys have any suggestions on where to look to find this stuff?

Yep, I've bought melamine coated boards at Lowe's. You can buy iron on melamine tape to cover the cut edges if desired.
I just bought some that was 18" wide for Margy's garden shed, but they have other widths.
 
Look in the finished lumber section, not the closet section?

if you look it up on the website and tell it your store, they should tell you the aisle and bay it is in.
 
Melamine is my goto material for certain things. Shelves are not one of those things. Nor cabinet carcasses. Way too weak and does not take fasteners well. Real wood will be just as easy to work with and much more durable. But it won't be a solid color. To get a similar effect, I've used prefinished plywood from Menards which has nice clear UV cured finish on it. Use iron on edge banding on the edges and then use Rustoleum rattle can lacquer over that. Turns out great.

Thanks for the replies, all. I'm not sure how I missed it. I must have been looking in the wrong parts of the internet...
As far as building material goes. I think given the particular application (in a closet), and lack of space to paint and finish, I think the ease of melamine is the way to go. But, I'll see if I can check out other viable options when in the store.

Now, who in the north jersey area wants to help a fellow pilot with a weekend project? :)
 
We're huge fans of Elfa shelving from Container Store. You screw a metal strip into the wall at the top of the closet and then everything hangs from that. We've been using it for 25 years and is our go-to. Make an appt and take your dimensions in. They'll do a full design while you wait based on what you want, then print off a parts list. They usually have August and January sales, but with COVID, there seems to be a perpetual sale right now.

Similar to the stuff at HD, but with a ton more options.
 
I've built many closets with Home Depot melamine.
Consider getting the pieces with "holes" for the vertical pieces, solid for shelves and tops.
