Everything Offends Me
What the hell is "Dinner Party Attire?"

I got an invitation to an event I intend to attend, and it says "Dress is dinner party attire."

I've never heard of that, and my google-fu fails me....

Sort of like business casual......no jeans, sneakers or sweats.

A sport coat is always good and you don't have to keep it on if the others in the room don't. Dress slacks, nice shoes and button shirt. I hate sweaters but some folks wear the sweater over the shirt, I'd do the sport coat and loose it to get comfortable as soon as possible.

If it stated formal or better......I would do all I could to not attend, I hate that stuff shirt crap.

On the East coast, this means Sport Jacket (at a minimum)

And no, Nick, not this kind of sport jacket...

Ahh, ok. So if I read it right, I throw on my coat, and I'm pretty much already there (short of the sneakers, but that doesn't change on me, even in formal settings).

Thank you!

cutoffs and a death metal band t shirt should do the trick.

Pay no mind to those folks from east of the Mississippi.

Dinner party attire in New Mexico is an aloha shirt, shorts (currently below the knee required for men, wimmenz will just know what's appropriate), and leather sandals (no flip-flops and no socks unless you're a geologist). Cowboys may wear boots but then must wear jeans and tuck the legs in.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. HTH. :D:D

I could don my Cowboy stuff, because that is super easy. Cowboy hat, button up denim or red flannel shirt, jeans, boots and a bolo fits every type of dress (not kidding, btw).

Slacks, button-down shirt, and sport coat/blazer should do the trick.

In Iowa a few months back, you could find two guys in suits flying in a Cessna 140 over the middle of nowhere in Iowa, and three pilots in formal attire posing next to airplanes. ;)

"Dinner party" means at least a suit, and maybe you should look like James Bond (although you don't have to go that far if it doesn't say "black tie"). Really. Unless the words "business" or "casual" are used, even a sport coat and tie are underdressing when they say "dinner attire."

Not either one of the ensembles

Since it is not formal you do not need the tux, but they did not specify casual so I would not do business casual either. I would at a minimum require a nice sport coat, no jeans, dress slacks and dress shirt. If you want to be safe wear a suit and if it is a little more casual you can always take the tie off.

Scott, that's a very nice shot of you with your date prior to the Senior prom. However, the picture of your parents was totally uncalled for.:nono:

Hey now, don't blame me 'cause I was just returning fire after that global assault on our eyes. Anyway, aren't there international conventions in place against that sort of thing?

Nick this would be an appropriate outfight for your party. Make sure you have the appropriate hosiery

Thanks!! Your sister was a good date too, very well behaved! I got some tongue when she kissed me goodnight!:rofl::rofl:

Is that all you got? Heck I had to chase off most of her dates the morning after!

Nick,

I vote for the ass-less leather chaps look. You'll definitely never be short of coversation opportunities. :D

Nick.

As a pilot friend, I must tell you this.

Sneakers at a business dress function consign you to a "sales rep for life" lifestyle. I get the "this is my fashion statement thing." I've been there, done that. That works once you've arrived, like if you're a Hollywood Star. Not so much if you're looking to build a career.

Your POA friend,

Andrew

And west of the Mississippi, cowboy boots are alway acceptable, even with a tux.

What's wrong with a Tux? Mine's in the Jeep right now. But, I need it for the concert I'm singing in tonight. Different deal.

Dress up, Nick. It won't kill you. Heck, you could be like a guy I'm traveling to Japan with next week who needs to go out and buy a suit tonight. He doesn't own one, and visiting a customer in Japan not wearing one just isn't cool.

As a pilot, you should be representing aviation. A worn brown leather flight jacket, white silk scarf about ten or twelve feet long, tall lace up boots, brown flying pants with a jillion pockets, wool shirt, leather helmet and goggles, the split lens kind.

It would be best to add a little red rouge to your face, like you just got back from a mail run. Don't bathe or comb your hair before the party.

I sincerely hoped this helped.

John

In Miami, a Guayabera is perfect for any setting; casual to formal.
I learned how to appropriately dress in Miami very quickly.

Okay, I'll bite, and I'm NOT gonna Google it. I don't want my IP address looking up something that might be considered subversive. What the hell is a Guayabera? For the love of God please tell me it is not a leasure suit coming back! :mad2:

SCOTT! Your entire wardrobe is coming back in style!:rofl::rofl:

After giving this dilemma a little more thought I should add that when I was younger, in my twenties and early thirties, I did attend a few functions where the hosts felt compelled to suggest the appropriate attire. I found every one of them to be pretentious affairs of little or no enjoyment.

I stopped attending such functions after reaching that conclusion. I have even been known to wear white after Labor Day, you know, for the gasp factor. :)

I think it's a type of hat, and nothing else. LOL

Indeed. I came to the same conclusion, and implemented the same solution.

Well, its fun. Turns out, dinner party attire == Suit and tie. I'm glad I erred on the side of formal.

Was a good event.

I've not seen too many people wear tuxes to dinner parties, even in New York City in the social circles I've been in. For that matter it's not uncommon to see at least one person who's in sport coat or blazer and slacks. In the south and west of the Mississippi (also outside of major urban areas), that's generally not the case.

I'm with Andrew - don't wear sneakers.
