I went and saw Devotion last weekend. It was decent. Solid C movie. Acting was a little strange, with lots of pregnant pauses in the conversations. Showcased the Corsair, and mentioned how it compared to the Bearcat. Some of the flying scenes felt very CGI. I don't know how much of the flying was based off the true story, or how much was added for suspense.

I usually like to watch aviation movies in theaters on a big screen and big sound, but I think this one is fine to watch at home when it comes out.
 
Thanks for the report. I plan to stream it when the price gets down a bit.

I just watched Midway on Roku. Lots of CGI and unrealistic aircraft maneuvers. Acting was ok.
 
Devotion is pretty close to the emotional center, but there are some dramatic license issues. The Jesse's wife didn't meet Hudner until the Medal of Honor ceremony, Jesse didn't attack the bridge single handily. But a lot of the flying scenes are real and were filmed over the Washington Cascades, with CGI bomb effects
added. It does show the problem with the Corsairs on carriers, which is why they ended up with the Marines on land bases. Well worth the time to see in the theater at a morning showing. Hopefully it inspires folks to do a deep dive into the information about the real events and the history that is in the "forgotten war". Hudner was a great individual, as was Brown and the path he took to be a leader. I’ve read both the Devotion and Jesse’s biography. The movie did add some events for dramatic license. You’d probably think the Liz Taylor story was made up but that was actually true.

I watched it! It was good, just didn’t expect it to be emotional. There’s also another “plane” movie coming out soon, anyone watching that?

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I heard at Oshkosh last year there is no CGI. Every airplane in the movie was an airplane. They got every flying corsair in the...US? World?...to make it.

I don't know anything about the true story, but I have to imagine it is more interesting than the movie. It seemed the Liz Taylor story was the reason they made it.
 
I think it’s a great real-life story poorly executed on screen. The cinematic value is fine; but the way story is told is where it fails.
 
I love the Corsair, it is my dream to some day fly one. I have a friend that owns one. I was excited for the movie, but it fell flat. I thought the acting was sub par, and the choice of actors was questionable. I turned it off after about 20 minutes.
 
Another vote for great story but poorly told. I blame the director, I think the main actor is really gifted but he was played wrong and all my interest shifted to the Wingman. He did nothing to steal the show but did due to bad direction.

I think the Chosin(?) River scene was the cheesiest part. It made something brutal look so small and cheap.

Love the Corsair though :)
 
yeah, I think there were too many parallel stories trying to be told in this one....and 1-1/2 to 2-ish hour movies rarely allow for enough time for even one story to be told properly....
When I first heard this movie was in the works, I thought it would turn out just about like it did.
 
I thought the acting was just fine, and I thought the flight scenes were really cool. I thought the story was awful, we Americans have little taste for sad endings, this one included. Still, there aren't very many movies these days that feature aviators doing their thing, so I watch all I can.
 
Waking this one up because our local library got a copy, and we watched it tonight. Worth a watch. Not the best movie, not the worst. @charheep's "c" grade is about right in my opinion. Maybe c-.

Seems like they ran out of budget and skimped on the cgi... there were a few moments that looked like something from 15 years ago.

That is I think, the issue with the WAY the story was told, not the story itself. It failed to put something at the end that would have put some kind of perspective that left one feeling it was all worth it.

The promotional material pushed the racism story pretty hard, which probably hurt the box office. The people who want to see a movie about racism and those who want to watch airplanes blow things up aren’t the same people.
 
Reviving this one one more ag'in...

Watched most of this one on the flight home last night. I agree with the previous sentiment here - decent attempt, but fell a little flat overall. As others have stated, I couldn't decide if they were trying to tell a racism story, or friendship/wingman story, or what. Also, I think some of the scenes felt like they were the first draft and were never revised or reshot after reviewing. I have a few minutes left to finish it up (of course the airline arrives early when I really want another 10-15 minutes to finish my movie) - he just got off the chopper onto the carrier - so maybe something there will pull it all together, but I doubt it.

It does make me want to read the book to get the real story, though, so if the intent was to draw more attention and curiosity to that era, I guess it delivered what it wanted.
 
I thought the movie was actually pretty decent compared to a lot of stuff out there today. After watching the movie I looked up the real story and was surprised to see it was more truth than fiction than the average movie. I was also glad that there were actually aircraft used for a lot of the flying scenes instead of all CGI (like Red Tails).
