So I know this happens often but wanted to clarify. I have a student that recieved his SPC/medical and left half of it hanging out of his wallet so, of course, it was torn and unreadable. He did as the faa recommended and printed out a duplicate request form and sent it in snail mail. This was about 3 weeks ago The issue is the FAA's rate of return on requests. My student is getting close to his solo and has yet to recieve his copy. This is more of an annoyance than anything but it brings me to a question. I had the assumption that they could fax you a temporary which is better than nothing. This is excellent if you're an airline captain that happend to leave your wallet in the wash on an overnight trip. I tried to contact CAMI twice and could not reach anyone on the phone. Any ideas?

Can they just go and get a new medical. It may be quicker that way.

It sure was windy in LNK Sunday 160/30G39. I hope your student gets a better day than that for soloing.

You can have him go to the FAA website and create a login. Then he can request temporary authority to exercise certificate privileges. The e-mail comes almost immediately. I did this when I had my wallet stolen a few years ago. I'm not sure how this works if he is a student, though. I can't remember if I had to give my certificate number in order to create a login.

You may request temporary authority to exercise certificate privileges of a valid airman and/or medical certificate or verification of an expired flight instructor certificate in the form of a facsimile (FAX) or e-mail. This authority will be valid for 60 days pending receipt of a permanent replacement certificate or reinstatement of an expired flight instructor certificate. Only one (1) on-line request for temporary authority can be obtained within any six (6) month period.

They can fax a temporary medical but not a temporary student pilot cert. Just send him to an AME and get it redone. MUCH faster.

On the same topic - I lost my wallet and was able to get a temporary authorization via e-mail. I also ordered a new pilot certificate on the FAA's website.

I can't find a method to order a new medical on the FAA's website. The only thing I can find is this:http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/medical_certification/request_copy/
Is there not a way to easily get a replacement medical online?

We used the same print out that jesse referred to however, like I mentioned, I'm not having good luck with the FAA. Another one of my students that had gotten a DUI 10 years ago had to have his sent to Oklahoma for a "review". That was two months ago. He called repeatedly and thankfully word is he'll be getting it next week. Now granted thats a different situation but the fact that they're "backed up" has me worried. I have been told I have no say in what happens with my students medicals due to security reasons so I'm doing what I can.

Tony: I haven't talked to the FSDO in length other than to ask if he needed a replacement for the amount of damage. I assumed Oklahoma would have a better response for me.

Bruce: I'm trying to prevent him from going back to get a duplicate. They're $165...not exactly a cheap endeavor.

Mari: I'll look into that idea. I'm not sure how they'll handle the student pilot aspect either though but its worth a shot. I hate to keep this guy from soloing due to paperwork.

On a good note, one of my other students showed me an excellent solution to preventing damage to medical certificates today. He found a small flat plastic holder for car insurance cards. It fits perfect and thin enough to be put into the front cover of a logbook! To top it off, it's easily removable for us CFIs that need to sign them! What ane excellent idea!

Tristar, just remember, FAA changed the definition of "I lost my medical and need a copy". It is now a "reissuance". That means if there's anything in the pilot's past, the whole thing gets re-reviewed. That's now 94 days.

I know there is no way the FAA would get away with grounding an airline captain for 3 months due to a lost medical so there has got to be some other way.

The site there is what I used. The copy came in the mail. What do you mean by a "new" medical?
I ordered a new pilot certificate on the site - I didn't see anything on there about them sending me a new paper medical to go with it.

Glider Student Cert, issued by FSDO not AME, no medical required.

He contacted the FSDO, they helped him fill out the appropriate request and sent it in to OKC.

They sent him back a PLASTIC STUDENT CERTIFICATE...
now just how is the CFI supposed to put the solo endorsement on that..

They had to reaccomplish and issue a paper certificate.

Maybe I'm not awake but it says, "Request a copy of your medical certificate".

OK, I see what you mean. Maybe I did do it by mail...
The other weird part is the form that they provide to you has a drop down to select the certificate you're requesting. The medical is not one of them.

I guess I'll have to give them a call tomorrow to see what exactly they want you to do.

A white-trash harley chain attached to the wallet is starting to sound like a great idea - after all this crap I'm going through trying to get the contents of mine replaced.

One of the first things my CFI did was to tape an envelope inside the cover of my logbook. That was where my student medical stayed, since I needed both to fly.

Didn't realize it would be such a hassle to get an other copy.

That's where I've always carried mine. (My primary CFI suggested the same thing.)

I think I'm going to have to get a new plastic certificate - the lettering is wearing off mine in my wallet. Sigh.

I did some looking up. AME/Examiner/Inspector can issue a new student pilot certificate for you to endorse. If his medical is still legible then he can solo with the new student and old medical. If his medical is actually destroyed then he can wait for a reissuance or go see an AME and get a new one.

Tyvek

Some hotel "keys" come in Tyvek envelops - save those. Or, just cut and fold a piece to wrap around it.
