Why did they just shut one down and then divert? What did running on one engine and a malfunctioning second engine do for them besides scaring the pax even more?

Coming out the front or sides?.....not ok.

Some mech probably put a spark plug in the tailpipe and ran it rich.

Depends what it was, qrh for engine surge or stall doesnt really lead to a shutdown in a lot of cases. With no cockpit fire indication and depending on parameters you probably wouldnt.
