Finally we have a great VFR morning after a week of foggy mornings. Last night was nice but after a week of driving 1 hour each way, the additional 35 minute trip to the airport was not gonna happen.

Checked weather this morning -- up early, head to the airport. Light haze, light to no wind -- a perfect morning for flying the Chief!!

Hopped in the car, 35 minutes later pulled into the airport: Big Sign hanging on a hangar -- "DRAG RACING HERE TODAY! GATES OPEN AT NOON!"

I slowly pulled up to the hangar, called Flight service for NOTAMs:

"Airport closed 0400 on the 19th to 0400 on the twentieth..."

:mad3:

Private or public airport?

I am based at a private airport and that happens once and a while. It is a bit annoying but the idea was to raise money for the airport to keep rents lower and do runway/taxiway improvements so we all went along with it. The owners tried really hard to not inconvenience people. They even went so far as paying for tiedown space at a nearby airport for people who had to fly on those days bu could not get in or out of the airport.

Public -- county owned (which is de facto standard around here, since the boards are populated by non-pilots who see a nice fat revenue stream from those rich pilot types).

No notice, no nuttin.

That sux. But how can there be no notice? How would they expect to attract people to come drag race unless they did send out notices and advertise?

It's Greene County, PA.

No one moves there, few move out.

"OF course it's the 2nd weekend in June -- didn't you know????"

Embrace it, and remember that drag racers are also marginalized by much of society and the media just as pilots are. Pilots are all rich fat cats and drag racers are all greasy hoods. .. Except for the truth, I am both a drag racer and a pilot , and neither a fat cat or a greasy hood. Together maybe we can each help each other. Dave

Many racers become pilots. Heck, I would have hung out for the races, pulled the plane out and washed it if it was a warm day. That was a chance to grow GA. If you have money to drag race, you have money to fly. See if you can get them to trade where they put their $$$.

There aren't any other 3/4 mile long strips of pavement to drag race on????

They HAD drag races which were very popular at my home field for the last couple of years. I asked the airport manager about them a few months ago and he stated that the FAA would no longer let them do it because it involved closing down a runway which was funded by the feds...? We have one concrete strip and one grass strip, Not sure if that would make a diffrence. The people putting it on was a local car group with no affiliation to the airport.

Too bad it had to steal a nice flyable Saturday. We've had a couple of 'special use' events at our airport, but they didn't close the field for an entire day. We do have a very active skydiving business based here which doesn't close the field but requires a lot of extra caution on weekends. My CFI and I were out in the Chief at 8 AM and by the time we got back at 10 there were already a sky full of chutes. One of the tandems misjudged the wind and landed about a half mile from the airport, just off the final approach path. Didn't slow 'em down any...they've been jumping all day in 15 kt+ winds.

too bad they can't just "work you in". . .

Then you should have known....:rolleyes2:

I'm not from Greene County.

Then your prior statement "Nobody ever moves here" is not correct....:wink2:

It remains correct -- we moved to Fayette County -- one county east of Greene.

Henning, I saw those responses coming from 4 states away. Up a little late/early were we?

:cornut:
