Funny, our guys at the Boston office are laughing about how they're missing the snow that Washington DC and us in TEXAS are getting.

Woke up to over an inch, by 10:00 I measured 4.5" on the top of my Volvo in north Fort Worth. www.nbcdfw.com headline now says they've revised totals up to 7". :yikes:

Working from home is awesome. :-) Took my oldest daughter out for her first snow driving experience--today's one of her college class days, had her drive and I pulled the belt tight and guided her verbally. Jessica did good. :yesnod: Didn't scare me even once.

Tonight, 26F; tomorrow should be interesting--ice and frozen slush.

Bet the manager at ADS is really kicking himself for striking "Purchase or Update Snow plow equipment" off of this year's budget.

Our business location is not far from KDTO, and we're not far from the path for the 45* entry to a left traffic pattern (google map Denton County Auto Salvage and zoom to see airport and you'll find us). I'm occasionally hearing someone flying over. But DTO reporting close to mins as of this report.

Might wander out to the field after work and see if there are any interesting photos to be taken of the aircraft on the transient ramp.

And you're right about the ice and slush being pretty interesting tomorrow.

Gonna be a bit of a boost for our biz (recycled auto parts). Gonna be more calls from the collision repair shops, insurance adjusters, and individual car/truck owners for sure.

Unlike the folks north of Wichita latitude, we don't see this enough to remember the skills to drive on it safely.

My white Westies almost got a squirrel today; in snow is the only time they are camoflauged <g>

Best,

Dave

Snow forecast for Altanta tomorrow. I did not move here from Illinois for this. Brrrr.

It's simply not the same. Our snow has been around since December. Yours will be gone in 2-3 days tops. :)

Almost?

They need to do better if they ever want to be Texas huntin' dawgs... :D

So my canceled flight from yesterday was originally rebooked LAX-DFW-IAD. Looked at the weather last night, and looked at the availability on the non-stop this morning - since the availability looked good, I coaxed AA into putting me on the non-stop (no charge, thanks to the east coast weather waiver  ) and I took the non-stop (even got the upgrade :D). It was the same DC-based crew as I had going out on Monday - they'd been stuck in LA all week thanks to the weather. You know you fly a lot when you get to know the crew on a particular route....

Anyway, it was a good thing I changed it: the LAX-DFW segment was 25 minutes late, the DFW-IAD segment was 3 (!) hours late. Better off than the guy headed to BWI that was ahead of me in the security line - he ended up on the IAD nonstop because the BWI flight was canceled.

We're having way too much snow in PA, too.

I stopped by my local drome yesterday -- they haven't even tried to plow -- not a taxiway, not a runway -- not even the ramp.

But -- imagine this -- the parking lot was plowed for the airport restaurant patrons. :frown2:

North Texas has now officially set a record for the most snow ever to fall in a single calendar day. As of 7 p.m., DFW had received 7.9" of snow. The record for the most snow received in a 24-hour period is 12.1" from January 15 to January 16, 1964.

UPDATE: As of 8 p.m., DFW had received 8.7" of snow.

Jason: Since you seem to know so much about it, what is one supposed to do with snow? I guess I can Google that, but can you give us any special insight? I see folks making snow men. Some shoveling it. Anything y'all that have it a lot can suggest

Best,

Dave

As of 10:50, my lights are out. Bet it takes at least a day for them to be fixed. My circuit has always been fragile; they are almost never off on the other side of the street. No heat. Nice.

What a bunch of maroons.

I lost power for a couple hours last weekend. Thankfully they got it fixed. Life without heat is rough.

Dave, make a snow angel and post your photo here.

Wow, Spike. Do you have power back yet?

My son was flying home from Chicago yesterday. He made it as far as Little Rock and then drove the rest of the way to Keller late last night. It was his birthday and they had his party without him.

Spike, did you get power back?

We ended up breaking our 24-hour and calendar day records; DFW officially recorded 12.5" of snow, areas around it got up to 14".

Just because somebody should! And he even has my hair!

Nice snowman.

---

Nope, no power, and I bet it will be two days (at least). Bad thing about being in an older part of town (our home was built in 1951), is that the power infrastructure is old, and every time it fails, they do a quick patch job on it (because it's always in the context of a crisis, more often major thunderstorms with wind, but also ice storms and now, snowstorms). They never come back and overhaul it - make comprehensive repairs to improve the reliability. THose get saved for industrial customers.

So, our power fails. All. The. Time. Meanwhile, the power across the street pretty much never goes off.

I am about to the point of buying a standby generator, which is a ridiculous thing to have to do in the city, but without electricity, my gas furnace cannot work.

At least we have gas hot water.

Also had to dodge a bunch of fallen trees to get out of the 'hood.

Here are some pics. Included are some funky ambient night shots.

Dang! What a pain. :(

It took us several years before we broke down and bought a small generator...don't know why we put it off for so long. It sure is nice to be able to plug in a few things, like the blower for our gas furnace, and the fridge, coffee pot and a few lights.

Having a gas hot water heater and gas stove tops, plus the gas heater in the hangar helps when we lose power in the boonies.

Those are pretty. :)

It's an honest weatherman says, "Today's forecast is bright and sunny with an 80% chance that I'm wrong."

There was a communist named Rudolph. One day he looked out the window and said, "It looks like a storm is coming." "No it isn't," said his wife. "Besides, how would you know?" "Because," he responded, "Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear."

On this site you can look at web cams all over the world. The search feature has a lot of flexibility. I checked on cameras in Estonia and Russia for kicks (we have projects there)

Dallas looks chilly.
We are waiting on our dose of snow to start here.

That's cool! Thanks for the link; I've always been surprised how hard it is to find good webcam links. This is the cat's meow!

Portable generator + suicide cable = cheap standby power. :nono:

I've got a 1500W unit that I bought a number of years ago for my mountain land. I've used it a couple of times here during extended outages.

And yes, I pull the house breakers and plug the critical equipment directly into the generator (no suicide cable).

but without electricity, my gas furnace cannot work.

Without electricity I don't have water of any kind either since I have a well. Luckily the electricity doesn't go out much since we have underground lines. I think there has only been one instance in 17 years when the power was out for more than a day.

Update:

Power came on today, for a while. I knew because of calling and answering machine ... answering.

Went home to check on things. While there, power flickered mightily and went off with a "bang."

Off since.

Scored big generator, hooked up to furnace. Error code: replace controller. Other furnace: same code. The surge took 'em both out, so no heat. And repair required.

Staying at neighbor's home tonight (across street, where power never fails).

Grrr.

Update:

Power came on while I was up defrosting and gobbling down Marco's Pizza (Frfank Nuccio makes a good pie!).

Hooked furnaces back up to power, and they both work fine. They just did not grok the generator power; I know not why, but don't care, neither.

House is up to about 60*, should be comfy-ish in about an hour.

and the weather marched its way over to HIlton Head. I got off the plane and drove through snow coming straight at my car. On 278 (off 95) I could not see the road white lines - I was guessing.

Glad you have power back on, and that you aren't going to have to replace your furnace controllers ($$$). Time to go house hunting?

So much for getting away from winter.... :frown2:

It really was only for about 20 miles... when I finally got within say 5 miles of HHI itself, I could see the roadway again. Snow, but hadn't stuck to the ground just yet and in fact this AM it has already melted away - gone.

It's sunny and 40 right now. Sunny and 50 tomorrow.

Spike, glad you got some power on finally. What a nightmare.

The Dallas Morning Blues said 200,000 in Dallas were without power; I'll report it's only 199,999 now that Spike's is on again. Really bad for overhead power lines. Water also penetrates transformers and they go out in a big bang; sometimes with accompanying flash.
We lost power for a short period. Still not fun since this home is all-electric.

Best,

Dave

:) :blowingkisses:

BTW, I may be headed for Dallas next week to spend time with the kiddos. I hope you guys have better weather down there by then!

It's going to be mid-50's to -60's this week, most of the snow is already melted. C'mon down!
