I stopped in Basin Harbor B06 Vermont for lunch today. It was a very pretty flight with the leaves so colorful, but this crew car took the cake!

OK, so it wasn't a Crew Car. But it is a beautiful vehicle: '58 'Vette.

I took this closeup of the panel. Note the bar near the top of the Radio - the "Wonder Bar". What did this do, back in 1958?

No, it isn't a mis-spelling of Wonder Bra.....

it's like a scan button - it went to the next AM radio signal. :)

Yep, that was a high tech feature on new radios in the late 50's. These radios had tubes in them. Any of you guys remember tube testing stands at the grocery stores?

Any of you young whipper snappers not know what a radio tube is? Never seen one?

And what is meant by, "Don't touch that dial?" ;) We still use thermal emission devices (tubes) in the latest high power digital transmitters.

Of course... but nobody has accused me of being a young whippersnapper in a long while! In Brit-speak they are valves.

The predecessor to 7-11 "Quick Shop" up the street had one.

All I have to say is that is badass.

And now I want to go to B06.

OK, Nick, here is an aerial of the airfield. Oh, BTW, the resort closes next weekend for the winter. I assume the airfield closes when it snows....

Gorgeous!

Some day, I'm going to be wealthy enough to have property in New England and New Mexico, and I can get the best of all worlds.

Crew Cahr? Skip, you know that around these parts the below is a crew "cahr." I guess the season is over and the natives can have back the territory. You may recognize Dolphin Marina, across the bay from South Harpswell. I took the shot on 10/11 from Dick Merryman's wharf, just "down th' rhd" from Estes Restaurant.

Come on up to visit. Estes is closed for the season but Taste of Maine is open till year end.

I wish I had taken a picture, but my all time favorite was the beat up international scout plow truck I got in Racine (KRAC) once. The best part was that it still had the plow atttached in mid june! The FBO guy profusely apologised that he didn't have a better car, but that thing was more fun than the usual crew car you get.

Yes, I remember them. And they were "calibrated" to sell tubes. :D

Real radios glow in the dark.

Yup. Even my solid state HF rig has a tuning dial. :D

Hollow state technology still has its place. 1500 watt amateur radio amplifiers still use them, too. And when I find my old SB-100 out in the garage I'm going to drop a pair of new 6146s and a driver tube in it and put it back on the air. Something about messing around with the old stuff that still has a serious appeal to me.

One ham friend's motto is "If it glows, it goes." ...right into the nearest dumpster. Then again, his hamming interest is in VHF/UHF-FM, where tube technology has been obsolete for decades.

So does mine. Doesn't mean it needs glassfets.

Hm. Are there any tube-type aircraft radios that are still legal to use?

Is the limo from Rockland Me's Owlhead Transportation Museum? They have a collection of cars that will pick you up at the FBO and drive you over to the museum. That, or you can taxi ight on up to it.

Silver,

No, this limo is for pilots to use, just get the keys and go. Located in Jasper AL, at Sanders Aviation.... Good folks, good prices.
