Cool new feature on FlightAware

That is cool. The flightaware site keeps getting better. My favorite feature is the alerts I get on my cellphone when I file an IFR flight plan. I get a message that it was filed and then I also get a message showing what routing I am going to get when I call for me clearance.

I like that feature too. However, I would like to only get a message when I am the one who files the flight plan. As it is now, I get a message ever time the plane flies. I know this works out well if no one else flies your airplane but if other people fly it you sometimes get messages at weird hours.

True, it is an n-number issue feature on flightaware. Not really a problem for me since my plane is my plane.

They have a similar feature on Fltplan.com which is how I file my flight plans, but even they don't have a feature to only send messages to the person who filed.

That's easy enough to manage; when you file your plan, enable alerts for the plane you're flying:

http://flightaware.com/account/manage/alerts/

Click "Enable" on the aircraft for which you want to receive an alert.

When the flight is over, go back there and click "Disable" to disable alerts for that aircraft. You'll only get alerts for the time period you have the plane.

I thought about that but it seemed like a lot of bother. But you are right.

It also now appears to have an "Earth View" and "Aviation Sectional" overlay view for the map. Very, very cool!

I also like the alert feature but I use it to tell when folks are getting close to their destiation. I used it when folks were like 15 out flying into the FlyBQ on Friday night so I knew when to pop over to the airport.

It doesn't seem to be 100% accurate just yet, nor is it on 100% of the flights, but I have seen it. It also seems to disappear in some cases. FlightAware is definitely working on improving their website with new features, which I like. Very cool. I still wish that it had better accuracy. Sometimes you don't show up at all, or don't show up until well into the flight. I have big chunks missing out of some of my flights, go figure.

For a while I had alerts set up for all the planes I flew. Since I was pretty much the only one who would fly them IFR, it wasn't an issue to get much in the way of additional alerts. Plus when someone else was flying, it was generally a friend. Now I just keep them on the Aztec, especially since if someone else files a flight plan on it I want to know. :)

I get the message when I file. How to I get the expected routing message?

When I get the 'filed to depart' message the routing is in there. For instance I filled a few weeks ago 10C to KJVL direct.

The message I got when the flight plan was filed was:

N8116B filed to depart @1230 cdt > KJVL @ eta 1300 cdt (SIMMN)

The SIMMN is my routing. SIMMN is an intersection that is to the west of KORD used for departing traffic to the the west and northwest.

Thanks Scott. Do you usually get the routing that is shown on Flightaware?
Most of the time. While I got that routing message I never got that actual routing. Chi-App kept me VFR until they got me out of their airspace. The next controller was able to give me IFR direct.

I was lucky enough to get a controller that realized that their standard departure was going to create more work for him, route me out of the way, and he was able to do what was better for him and his customer.
