Cirrus Driver's get a fancy watch

Remember Cirrus is selling a lifestyle, not just an airplane. The watch is a very logical accessory, and pretty easy to roll that cost into the retail price of an SR/SF.

They have to distract ya from the plane they’re selling you...

I’m not a watch guy but I do like those Breitlings.

As to the “lifestyle” thing, I got a 185 so I guess I can’t be critical. Not that I take it out in the wilderness, but I read the right websites!

Me too. Hard to justify the value proposition of a spendy watch, though, and I don't need the ego stroke. I'm putting the money toward my Virgin Galactic space ride!! :)

My $20 Casio did conk out after four years, so I bought another for $17, this one with UTC time a button-push away and a 10-year battery.

I can’t afford the airplane,and I definitely wouldn’t spend that much on a watch.

Ofcourse it’s quarts and has a digital read out too

At the fuel flow I fly, and my average price at the pump, that's 86 hours, or 1 to 1.5 years of flying depending on what's going on in my life at the time. Certainly not a value proposition for this member of the "riff raff lifestyle" of the avocation. Insufferable ricardos...

It's a pretty slick watch actually if you check out the site: https://cirrusaircraft.com/breitling/

It's not flashy, has a masculine wristband, a nice face plate.. and it's made by Breitling. Outside of attaching the name "Cirrus" to it and upsetting the non Cirrus pilots I'm not sure what's wrong with the watch. I'd be happy to own one

*PS - value proposition of a watch? Arguably in today's age there is zero reason to have a watch.. with our phone always on us and hosting a boat load of information that a watch does not.. there is really no reason to have a watch unless you just want one. But the "value proposition" of most toys is hard to justify.. otherwise we'd all be driving base model Camry's and we wouldn't fly for personal or private use (having said all that, I would have a very hard time justifying the $5K price tag for this! Hence why I don't own one)

What people consider to be "value" is highly subjective! For me, I apply it differently to different purchases.

If it makes sense to you, then by all means, go for it! My RV-9A doesn't make fiscal sense at all, but its value is off the charts as to what it can provide me. What the plane needs, the plane gets.

But when I see a three AMU price tag for a watch, I figure I could better use that money to purchase my ADS-B system, my backup iFly 740 GPS and 150 gal. of 100LL.

Yup! And therein lies the intrinsic value of things.. And yes, $3K does buy a lot of avgas.. even for an expensive plane that's a good 5-15 hrs of flying, if including the overall hourly operating cost of the plane

According to Cirrus' site there are only 220 of them made, makes you think that if they're still offering it they're not exactly moving in big numbers. Still a cool thing though in my book, and part of that whole lifestyle thing Cirrus is selling

It's a $9000 quartz watch with a corporate logo on the dial. As a retirement gift for Cirrus salespeople it would be only slightly cheesy.

Beyond that, not sure how I’d feel strapping that bit of extravagance on and walking through unpaid TSA and then calling up unpaid controllers as I departed...

Site shows under $5K? That's really not at all an exorbitant amount of money for a Breitling.. or Rolex.. or most "nice" things.. don't most things you purchase have a corporate logo on them anyway? I'm not buying one.. but a lot of the ridicule for this thing seems to stem from anti Cirrus prejudice. At least as a brand they have other swag to sell people that is commensurate with the product and isn't just the run of the mill Hanes unisex XXXL t shirt with a logo stenciled on that comes off after 3 washes

Thats a whole can of worms right there.. so.. IBTL.. I assume if you own a Breitling and have your own plane your time around TSA getting enhanced pat downs will be limited anyway.. and the controllers won't see your $5K extravagance anyway as you depart in your $900K plane. For all they know that guy in the SR22 on the other side of the radio may be wearing Old Navy and Ross.. it's a Schrodinger's pilot really

Yes, it's only a $5k quartz retirement watch. Typo on my part. The rest of my post stands. And I would feel exactly the same way if it was a Cessna logo.

^well that's fair at least
