Cirrus down near Indianapolis N99EC

Looks like it might have been a rental plane owned by Eagle Creek Aviation. Not 100% sure, as it's not listed on their website.

I believe someone said it was a rental. Apparently someone said the aircraft was in an almost vertical descent. Lots of questions on this one, hopefully it will get sorted.
 
Sad situation. That crash is very ugly ...
 
The weather was apparently clear. The route was apparently under a charlie with the floor at 2100 msl. People are saying he supposedly left a suicide note.

If true, a suicide will likely set back any attempts to get the FAA to be more understanding of situational depression that temporary treatment would be beneficial for. (Not to be confused with clinical depression disorders).

Very sad and tragic.

Odd place to put it down if it was suicide. The airport where he departed is surrounded by cornfields. They aren't even planted this time of year, so it wouldn't have caused much financial harm to the farmers even.
 
That was my gut feel when I saw the flight track. I’ve seen several of these that start with a meandering track away from the departure airport, then some sort of controlled circling turn (may not be a full circle), and a terminal dive, all in hard VFR weather. Any one of those by themselves is just somebody up for a joyride, but it’s the controlled turn followed almost immediately by the hard dive at the end that sells it. Not a spiral, not a stall/spin, not a best-glide - a deliberate turn, then a steep, straight-ahead dive.
 
The damage is so complete, that it almost looks like the wreckage was hit by a train(s) after airplane struck the ground.

The person may have been making a "statement" to a specific individual who lived in that area. Unfortunately, its been known to happen with even worse results.

So more "rumors" although I suspect this is true, please take it as unsubstantiated. Apparently was a 20 year old whose girlfriend had recently dumped him. He supposedly had 250 hours in Cirrus, completed a checkout in this aircraft, immediately rented it, and did this, about a block from the ex's house.

Now some general comments from me. If you are having suicidal thoughts, please get help, any help to start, but professional help ultimately. I think suicide is a pretty heinous and selfish act. It just takes the pain someone is feeling internally, multiplies it and spreads it to the people you love, friends and people you don't even know. It is not a solution, it is a curse that gets thrust upon so many people by the person who committed suicide. Please think of others, especially those you love and love you. Get help.

Unfortunately, a good number are unable to think that rationally. It takes intervention to break their thought train. The problem is most of us don't know when to intervene especially with social interaction being so "technical" vs personal in recent times.

Exactly, and if nobody recognizes there is a need for intervention because the person is hiding it … not many options towards prevention at all.

Lost a student to suicide some years ago. His parents found him hanging in his bedroom closet. Lost a student a week ago today. Not to suicide but hit by a school bus. It’s all the same pain though. I’m still struggling.
 
Many years ago a good friend committed suicide. I was the last one to talk to him. I thought he was just having a bad day. It was a terrible experience.

I did get some education on the subject and promised myself that if I ever got an inkling that someone I knew was even considering this, I would challenge them on it.

The first one was my business partner. I'm not sure he appreciated my suggesting the subject of suicide. I told him my story and why I felt compelled to say something. I still don't think he appreciated it, but I felt I had kept my promise to myself.

About two years ago I got the same feeling about my neighbor who had just lost his wife and was struggling with physical problems. So I told him my story and my concern. I'm not sure he appreciated it either. But he's still alive (and so is my ex-partner) so, there's that.

My takeaway was to speak up and ask someone directly about this if you have any concern at all. It's awkward, uncomfortable, and they probably won't appreciate it. But you may just save a life. Many times people in this state just need someone to talk to. Not suggesting you try and counsel them, but you can try and convince them to talk to a professional, and keep asking about it until they do.
