I sit up at the hanger enjoying this lovely summer day with a gentle breeze. The kids are riding their bike on the tarmac. It’s a scene that has been repeated throughout the summer. One thing that I think would add the the experience is hearing the local radio calls. Sometimes I bring my portable up but what would be the cheapest way to put a radio in the hangar??

Almost any old scanner will have air band and AM. Usually $5-$10 on Craigslist because they’re not worth much now that public safety has gone digital and now is starting to encrypt everything.

You could always listen to Live ATC, assuming your airport has a feed.

I bit the bullet and bought the CCRANE Skywave. $80 or so. Uses AA cells, even the rechargeable kind. AM. FM. Short Wave. Aircraft. Ham bands. Digital Tuning. Comes with an AC supply if you've got AC in the hangar. Clock. Alarm. Best bells and whistles do-all radio on the market today.
