Spare the legalities and such. Will a Cessna 170 door fit up and latch to a 172b,c,d etc era of 172? Looking to helping the local club outfit a Simulator for the local school. They need doors on the 172 cabin. I’m pretty sure they do fit. They still had the small lower hinge on the 172 on this era.

As I recall it should. I believe the same door was used for the all 170s and early 172/175s. But I don't believe it will plug and play with the latching. A quick look in an older 100 series parts manual will show if its the same core number which I think it is. And as an FYI, it can be done legally as well as I know/knew of a 175 with a 170B door on it.

Ok. That’s good to know. I’ll keep an eye out for a damaged door and maybe we can salvage it.

You'll have better luck looking for a 172 door vs a 170. Should be plenty of sprung/creased doors out there for the asking that are uneconomical to repair. Given it is for a school perhaps contact salvage yards with your request. Who knows maybe they'll offer a deal?

Given the hand-built nature of our little Cessnas, even getting the door from the next serial number off the line is no guarantee of a fit without some work.

I’ve seen some doors from the same plane that don’t fit. Lol

I wish that were the case. They sold so few RH opening window doors that they are very rare, and even more rare to see as salvage. One guy on the groups found one after looking for 5 years. I’ve looked for 4 years or so. They just don’t exist as salvage. They are on flying 172’s… just not for sale.

I think once they became an optional item in the late 50s most people didn't put the R/H open window in. Regardless, since this is only a simulator why not get a L/H opening window and fabricate some mount angles and install it on the right side? I believe the core P/N is the same between LH and RH. At one time there were used window assys on ebay or perhaps a salvage yard has a destroyed LH door but good window and you could swap the whole window & frame assy over? It will take some extra work but I don't recall it is that complex.
