Careful going to Canada with a computer...

It's not clear, but lemme guess, this is U.S. Customs he encountered on his trip back in to the U.S.? I had an adventure with them, too.

There are stories that U.S. Customs has confiscated BUSINESS laptops arbitrarily on re-entry from Europe and has yet to return them after YEARS. There is some law or rule that lets them do that.

Welcome back to Amerika.

No Mike, it was Canadian customs official on his way in to Canada. Can we spell it Kanada now?

No it would be Canadian customs. I have had this same thing happen to me there on more than one occasion.

The first time I put down I am there for business and had no business materials. They had a conniption because of my laptop, cellphone, and pager. Got it all cleared and a two weeks later I was returning, through the same Canadian city. So I put down business again and then listed all of those aforementioned items as business materials. Well, they had a conniption again and said to not do that. SIGH!

Third times the charm right? WRONG. The third time, same city again, just two months later they wanted every listed. Six months alter I went through and left the form blank until I got up there and asked them what they wanted me to put in there.

The funny thing is if I drive into Canada there is nothing but if I fly I basically get the cattle prod up the yoo-hoo.

I've heard that Canadian customs assumes that every American has a hand gun. So now they assume every American has porn?

"Just drop it in the box. Whatta you mean 'Drop what?'"

I am not trying to be funny here, really...........

Is porn Illegal in Canada? I know they have lots of strip clubs???

Was it Kiddy porn they were looking for?

If I have my laptop with nude pictures on it, does the laptop get taken away?

I just flew to Toronto and back last month. Brought my laptop as a carry on. No questions asked.

Been back and forth many, many times and carried a laptop and never had a problem either direction.

You guys must look DIRTY or something:D

No, they look American. Do you still have your Canadian citizenship?

When I drove to and through Toronto I had the most pleasant experience with every Canadian I met, including customs. It was the U.S. guys when I came back that gave me the wunnerful welcome home.

I was coming into Vancouver one day in late November of 2004 and just hit it wrong. There was a huge line for non-Canadians. The line had signs that said 1 hour wait from this point, there were ahead of me. There was a immigration official and I asked him if I could claim political asylum and use the shorter line as I had not voted for Bush. I got a good laugh from and and several other people around me started asking if they could as well, but he said that he could not do that.

I don't know why but getting into Canada by air, for Americans, can sometime be a real PiA. It is not just one province either. I have the computer stuff happen at Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, and Toronto. For some reason if you check in for business they tend to be a bit more twitchy about some things from time to time.

Kept both citizenship and passport! Travelling in certain parts of the world I use my Canadian and others my US. Going into Canada I use the Canadian, coming back I use the US. Don't know how they match these things up!

Now when I go in as I had my passport I ask them where I can get a good poutain and how are the Cannuck's doing. They think I must have emigrated to the US and they let me through ;)

Reminds me of that company in Texas that was selling kits to Americans on how to be Canadian! There was a small book on current facts (who is current PM), and Cdn slang, eh?, Cdn flag patches , etc.

That is funny. Well the whole Doug and Bob thing started of CBC telling SCTV that they had to have more Canadian culture.

Not a joke but when I was stationed overseas there was a lot of terrorism directed at Americans. this being just a little post Iranian Hostage crisis we were issued little Canadian flag pins that we would wear on our lapels to make the bad guys think we were Canadians and thus not a target. I still have mine too and I keep it in my luggage just in case I get in a bad spot and need to make a run to the Canadian embassy because the American one was overran.
