I was told by someone that they had their IPC cancelled because the CFII allowed their Basicmed to expire.
It has since been renewed, but the question remains.

Yes? I gotta check nuances. But certainly can if done under vfr.

Further checking shows yes. Just can’t go higher than 18k or faster than 250 if he’s the pic of the flight. IFR is fine.

If he’s not the pic, doesn’t even need any sort of medical.

Flight instructors can absolutely operate under BasicMed, with the same limitations for aircraft, altitude, speed, etc. that apply to all BasicMed operations.

That’s about it. I’ve been instructing with BasicMed for about 6 years now. It’s actually written into the regulations. 61.23(c)(1)(vii).

Exercising the privileges of a flight instructor certificate and acting as the pilot in command or as a required flight crewmember if the flight is conducted under the conditions and limitations set forth in §61.113(i).

If the pilot receiving the dual can act as PIC for the flight, the flight instructor doesn't need Basic Med or a medical certificate.
Keep in mind that the context of the thread is instrument instruction…if there’s a view limiting device involved, the instructor needs to be qualified as a crew member, correct?

Keep in mind the BasicMed safety pilot problem has been resolved for a couple years now if you’re referring to that.

No, I’m referring to “doesn't need Basic Med or a medical certificate.”
