Callsign to ATC

Reading another thread on missed radio callouts it got me to wondering if I could use a name as a callsign, like "Jaybird180" when I file my flight plan and call ATC?

I'll just wait for the wannabe jokes. :popcorn:
 
Well, if you build your own airplane and call it a Jaybird, then I guess you could do that though I think the correct designation is "Experimental 180". Around here, one of the flight schools got FAA permission to designate their aircraft callsigns "ADF 1", "ADF 2", etc.

I think "Maverick" is already taken.
 
Well, since custom callsigns are only local...

I have been known to use "Sac Arrow" in the pattern at non-towered airports during local POA gatherings.
 
Jaybird 180 has a nice ring to it,go for it.

According to AIM 4-2-4a3, it would be "Jaybird 180 Experimental" on initial call-up, and just "Jaybird 180" after that.

Yeah, well I want to do it in my Cessna and every other airplane I fly after that.

Maybe you should do something like that to stand out
 
Change it to symbol with no pronunciation like Prince did.

Or maybe NORDO would be better. I'm guessing you'd get some interesting reactions to your radio calls saying you're NORDO.

It did have a pronunciation, "The artist formerly known as Prince", BTW, this was all over contract dispute and the label owning the rights to the name "Prince".

That would be if you want an LOA to use a callsign for one facility(the tower at your local airport). That is what a lot of the university flight programs do. When they are on the local tower frequency they call themselves Riddle 34, Purdue 45, State 11, Illini 14, ext. In the flight plan they file the tailnumber just like the rest of us and when they talk to anyone other than their local tower they use their tailnumber.

AC 120-26K is how you would go about getting a worldwide callsign.

Oct 31, 2012 it was superseded by AC 12-26K.
 
When flying for Macy's, our KA200 was known as the "Bimbo Bomber." Without doubt, we often had babes aboard. And us pilots were called the "Gucci Brothers."

We actually had Gucci paint job.
