Everything Offends Me
So lets say I am at KMSP. I am VFR and I depart from runway 30L. Do I need to get a Class B clearance before taking off, or is the takeoff clearance itself a bravo clearance?

With Class B to surface, you're not really ENTERING the class B area, but you are operating within it.....

I would think that clearance delevery is in essence issuing the clearance with your departure instructions . sorry no fars/ AC's,etc. to back up my theory.

I don't know if DEN is typical or not, but taking off VFR, you will, at some point along the way usually hear "Cleared into the Class Bravo." As KD suggests, I doubt that those exact words are absolutely necessary in that context, but it might be SOP or at least a good "habit" for ATC so they don't forget in other contexts - sort of like signalling for a turn at 3 AM with no other traffic around - one less thing to think about.

If you're taking off from within the B-space (that's inside it, not under a shelf), your takeoff clearance is release into the Class B airspace, just as for IFR ops from towered airports, your takeoff clearance is your IFR release. That said, you should have heard someone say "Cessna 123, you're cleared out of/through Class B airspace" as part of the clearance you received from Ground or Clearance Delivery. However, if you didn't get your Class B clearance from Grd/CD, tower won't give you a takeoff clearance, so it's kind of academic, i.e., for all practical purposes, if tower clears you for takeoff, you're good to go into the B-space.

Again, this is applicable only when you're launching from a towered airport inside the surface area of the B-space.

I've never heard MSP tower say "cleared into the class Bravo" as part of a takeoff clearance or anything else. Approach will utter those magic words to an airplane outside the Class B, but if you're departing from the main airport (KMSP) the SUA clearance is assumed.

I never thought you could even get to taxi without a clearance from Delivery. To get all the way to the runway and talk to tower without a Class B clearance seems unlikely to me.

Exactly my point above. If you weren't cleared into the B-space, you wouldn't get a takeoff clearance at a towered airport inside B-space.

The only time it gets funky is if you're at a nontowered airport inside the surface area of the B-space, like that little field a couple of miles west of Dulles. Fortunately, IAD Tower can hear them on the ground, and they can get a clearance on the radio before launching without having to call on the phone.

Greetings,

When I go in and out fo MCO I always talk to departure clearance to leave the airport and they are always very specific to say Class B operation approved right before they give me the sqauk and other instructions.

No, I am not talking to myself. This is just to point out that Skip68 aka Skip is different from Skip Miller aka -Skip.

When you contact Clearance Delivery at MSP for a VFR departure, you will get "Cleared out of the Minneapolis Class B at or below 2200..."

Don't ask me how I know ;)

Fly safe!

When the class "B" goes to the surface you are allrerady in it when you are on the surface. You only need a clearance to enter a "B", not to stay in one. :) :)

Well, yes, Eamon, you are technically correct. But if you are on the ground at a class B airport, you won't be allowed to take off without getting a clearance with a squawk at least and probably a heading and altitude. Won't be allowed to TAXI without it.

So Eamon, say you have an emergency, successfully put your bird down in a field somewhere and need to truck it out. Where on the highway do you contact ATC and get Bravo clearance to continue to trailer it to the Bravo Surface airport which is your destination?

Not applicable.
No Bravo Clearance needed. You would just need to call ground control
for the movement. The good thing about this is all other vehicles must give you right of way as you are an airplane!! Might even get the highway patrol to put a "follow me" sign on the roof of the patrol car for the escort!
Dont forget to turn on your transponder!
