I know I'm gonna get more flak for this ( See Hazards Of 100ll) but, as pilots we must take these studies into consideration and look at our habits. We may be able to modify our behavior now and be safer pilots for a longer time in our golden years. :D

Binge drinking is linked to cognitive decline in older people, but the assumption could be made ( as a layman) that this includes all ages as habits are hard to break, and easy to form when young.

This also includes memory loss.

I think I'll have a drink.

For a minute I thought this thread was about me!

The definitions are amazing. I'll have 4 drinks at one time. It's not binge drinking, it's Friday night and it's my wife and I killing 2 btls of good wine with dinner, at home. I don't feel like I'm binge drinking. And I certainly don't wake up hung over.

I don't know who comanchepilot really is.....I don't know who comanchepilot really is.....I don't know who comanchepilot really is.....

Never get a DUI, Joe, and you'll be okay. Just never get one.

All I can say is that I'm very grateful that the previous generations of my Italian-American ancestors never knew how unhealthy their lifestyles were.

They all drank close to a bottle a red wine a day (each, not collectively), drank both caffe americano and espresso like water, had snacks of sopresatta and provolone cheese almost every night, thought that margarine was something that only Jewish people used, couldn't spell "cholesterol" in either language, and stayed mentally sharp until the respective days that they died -- generally well into their 80's or 90's.

Thank heavens they didn't know how unhealthy their lifestyles were.

In the meantime, I've already buried friends who died on their treadmills (literally) in their 40's and 50's, while subsisting on diets of tofu burgers and bean sprouts.

Personally, I believe that most "age-related" ailments in this country are the result of stress. Long-term, accumulated, never-ending stress. I think it eats away at all the body's systems.

In Italy, it's not uncommon to come across men in their 80's and 90's playing briscola on cafe tables in front of their houses while drinking a bottle of wine, eating a veal parmigiana sandwich, and smoking a cigarette -- all under the watchful eyes of their mothers, who are looking out the second-story windows. That's because stress is illegal in Italy.

Well, it may as well be. Italians get stress out of their systems immediately, as soon as the trigger occurs. They scream a little, swear colorfully, and accentuate the curses with exaggerated hand movements.

A minute or two later, having gotten it out of their systems, they have a glass of wine and forget about it. Life goes on -- for a very long time.

Interestingly, there is a study out now that says salt intake has nothing to do with high blood pressure.

Moderation is the key to life.

haha he said study

And I mean to impart a condescending tone to the word "study".

EDIT and to "moderation" too. Moderation doesn't fit my lifestyle.

won't get one if I'm home . . . . so a couple of bottles with wine at dinner once a year is defined as binge drinking now? That's crazy.

I never said I was out at a restaurant . . . or even at a friends house.

Yeah, you alky, just have one glass per day like me.

Joe, the Federal Psychiatrist defines alcohol abuse as "alcohol use in a setting that may create danger" which translates to "outside the home".

Seems to me you're okay according to that definition. :wink2:

Wow, it sounds like the Federal Psychiatrist has some common sense. That's about the best definition of "alcohol abuse" I've ever heard.

In fact, that sort of common sense coming from the Federal Psychiatrist is even more surprising to me than the fact that we even have such a thing as a Federal Psychiatrist, which is something I didn't know until just now.

I'm not sure whether I should be saddened by the fact that nation has become sufficiently troubled to need a Federal Psychiatrist, or gratified that the nation is getting help with its problems. But I am pleased that the Federal Psychiatrist and I agree with regard to what constitutes alcohol abuse, because most of the other definitions I've heard are downright idiotic.

A number of Coloradoans I've talked to wondered why the President came here after the Aurora shooting and really just shook our heads at the media saying it was to "console" us.

Is that what the Country really needs, a "Consoler in Chief?" was one comment from one Coloradoan at Oshkosh.

Kinda seemed stupid to us. But hey, so many lapped it up like kittens and a saucer of milk, it's almost eerie. Government loves you, apparently.

Sadly, we came to the conclusion over beers that apparently that's what much of the country seems to want. Daddy and Mommy.

It's just downright weird. Government was never supposed to do any of this stuff. People of previous generations never expected it to, either.

To see how pervasive it is, the safety briefing by the FAA Tower controllers and acting manager last fall wasn't titled something typical like "Centennial Tower Staff Local Pilot Briefing", it was titled "Fireside Chat with Centennial Tower".

Aww. Sounds romantic. Can I get some cookies and hot cocoa while we snuggle on the bear rug too? Can we spoon afterward?

This isn't new. Presidents have been trying to get more personal and personable since the beginning of mass media.

I dunno there Bruce, you haven't seen my wife after 3 glasses of wine!
