Yesterday, the Partnership for Public Service released the 2009 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government rankings. The rankings evaluate employee satisfaction across government in 278 federal agencies and subcomponents.

Top honors for large agencies went to: 1) Nuclear Regulatory Commission; 2) Government Accountability Office; 3) National Aeronautics and Space Administration; 4) Intelligence Community; and 5) Department of State.

Top honors for small agencies went to: 1) Surface Transportation Board; 2) Overseas Private Investment Corporation; 3) Congressional Budget Office; 3) Office of Management and Budget; and 5) National Science Foundation.
"This report cuts to the heart of what really matters to employees-issues of leadership, pay and benefits, training and a strong work-life balance," said NTEU President Colleen M. Kelley. "This year's rankings provide an excellent opportunity for agencies to re-examine their workplaces and work with frontline employees and their representatives to make immediate and concrete improvements."

National Treasury Employee Union issued a press release addressing the comparatively low ranking of the Department of Homeland Security. DHS is 28th out of the 30 ranked agencies. In addition to its overall ranking, DHS was ranked at, or near, the bottom of all surveyed agencies in 10 separate workplace categories, including employees skills and mission match; leadership; work-life balance; teamwork; pay and benefits, training and development; workplace diversity; strategic management; performance-based rewards and advancement; and family-friendly culture and benefits.

President Kelley noted that two DHS subcomponent agencies, CBP and TSA, also ranked very poorly in the rankings. Out of 231 subcomponent federal agencies whose employees were surveyed, CBP ranked 178th, while TSA ranked 213th.
