Loran chain goes down so we have some dead weight in the middle of the panel of the 'ol Cherokee 140. I offer up my 396 to the team and we split the installation of the 396. What a difference the external antenna makes. Green bars pop up all across the screen as soon as the power goes on. Much better situational awareness and a heck of a lot easier to see where I am going compared to the GX60. Now I just have to ease my dear wife into the concept of how necessary a new Bose ANR headset is for my flying comfort. I am on the verge of moving out of the aviation 'hood.

Just come home after each flight and complain about your headset and a headache,... "sorry hun, I'm not feeling up to dinner tonight, I think my headset is wearing out and I have a bad headache. Can we go this weekend?"

After a few times of this, say it finally bit the dust, and you need to get a new headset. Then, get a Lightspeed Zulu or Sierra, "Wow, this headset is great and I feel much better after my flight, Want to go for a nice dinner?" Take her to a nice dinner with the difference you saved instead of buying a Bose.

I bet you got a pretty good price on that 396....

Actually, just ignoring her when she talks to you would probably work better. Then when she screams "Are you listening to me?!?!?!" just look at her with a puzzled look, and say,

"I'm sorry, honey. I didn't hear you. That old headset just doesn't block the engine noise like it used to. I probably should get a Bose ANR, but they're so darned expensive..."

A few months ago, I asked an old engineer what he did for headsets during flight tests decades ago. The response:

Old Engineer said:
Headsets?! We didn't have any ****ing headsets! All of us wear hearing aids now, why do you think that is?!

I had a feeling I knew the answer, it was just much funnier hearing it from him.

On the headset, I own both a Bose and a Zulu. The Zulu is quieter, more comfortable, better features, and cheaper. Although the price is getting pretty comparable per the latest copy of Sporty's.

On the antenna installation, now I'm going to need to talk about getting an external antenna put in for my WxWorx box. I frequently have problems getting XM signal with it when I'm pointing the wrong direction. It gets annoying, because it seems like that's always when I start hitting a big line of cells.

When I first took lessons 20 years ago headsets weren't considered the necessity they are now. As a student in a 150 w/ the overhead speaker I could never understand how my CFI understood anything coming across the radio. I'd leave most lessons with a headache and a ringing in my ears.

Of course now I wouldn't think of flying w/o my Bose X, and I sure do enjoy GPS. Pilots today are so spoiled.
