As a lover of good BBQ and always seeking the best places to try, where are your favorite BBQ places.

Dave

The Best Barbecue I've ever had was at "The Patio" in Orland Park, Il, Western Suburbs of Chicago. Famous Dave's and Smokie Bones here in Northern Virginia sustain me until I can get back to the Midwest.

In terms of fly-in bbq, I've heard really good things about Pik n Pig in Carthage (I think?) NC.

Fly-in, I assume?

We-B-Smokin' at K81 Miami County in Paola, KS is where I went every couple weekends when I was in college about 55 miles away. I'm a bit of a BBQ connoisseur (it was my primary focus for culinary school, before I switched to being a professional pilot), and it's on my short-list for BBQ joints in the KC area, but it's location being at an airport shoots it to the top.

Several U.S. Presidents have gone there, most recently Obama (but please, don't let that make you think the place sucks; I do my best to ignore it. :stirpot:).

Also, they feature a POA thread on their 'Media' page.

Just a quick word of warning: Keep a weather eye out as you approach, as there are quite a few locals who come in NORDO. I've seen several close calls, with the closest being a head-on between a C421 and a small tail-dragger... I'd be surprised if there was more than 50' of clearance.

1. Oklahoma Joe's - MKC
2. Woody's Smokehouse - JLN
3. Big Al's - DAL

Just some of my favorites I've found on the road.

Hot City Barbecue in Los Banos, CA. Probably a mile or so from LSN.

Aptos Street BBQ in Aptos, CA and their other locations Trail Dust in Morgan Hill and Barbecue 152 in Gilroy.

Now that we've heard about a bunch of wannabe pretend barbecue, try one of these:

Cooper's, Llano, TX (KAQO) (they'll send a van for you if the airport car is out); Hard 8, Stephenville, TX (KSEP).

Of course, there are those who contend pork is better than beef. They're just confused.

LOL Texans. Cute.

Fly into M01 Dewitt Spain airport in downtown Memphis, leave the airport when you see a sign that says BBQ or Barbecue. Walk in the door.

By the way, BBQ IS Pork. Everything else is called "grilling".

In NC, BBQ is pork. There's a great fly-in BBQ at Gilliam-McConnell (5NC3) called the Pik-n-Pig. They have a unlisted delicacy called the BBQ Sundae (layers of barbecue, coleslaw, beans, topped with a hush puppie "cherry").

But, by and large, most of the best BBQ comes out of my own smoker. I used to do several pork shoulders and beef (yeah, I know not pork) briskets at my big party but we'd run out of meat. Now I do a whole pig. My smaller new years day party (in Virginia where we have more leeway as to meat selection): three briskets, 12 racks of baby backs, and seven chickens.

The Northeast is not known for it's BBQ but there are a few places that come to mind that have some pretty good food:

Bubba's @ Mohegan Sun Casino

Black eyed Sally's @ Hartford

Chester's BBQ @ Groton

The absolute best place I have ever had BBQ in CT is:

When pigs Fly @ Sharon

It's a haul to get here by damn it's good!

If it ain't from Texas...and it ain't beef...it ain't barbeque!!!

We Texans are kinda picky about that stuff.

Anything with pork is just a ham sandwich.

:wink2:

Bah!

"Grilling" is for steak.

Smoking can not be rushed.

And yes, I admit some pork can indeed be excellent barbecue (note the menu from Cooper's).

JP's Ribs at Bolton Field in Columbus, OH.
Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse.
Hog Heaven in Nashville.

Sounds like I need to make a trip to Texas...

Fly into KEXX. Find a ride to Lexington Barbecue. Thank me later.

Another vote for Hard-8. Land at Stephenville TX, and walk across the ramp and one street. When you come back, check your W&B carefully, cause you're gonna be full up on the best BBQ.

What they call BBQ in the east, is just fatty bones with lots of hot sauce on it. Ya gotta have meat, and by meat I mean - meat. Not marble, not veined, not crusty chitlin stuff, but meaty meat. Only get that in TX, and maybe some parts of OK or KS(far N TX).

The ribs at We-B-Smokin' on the field at Paola, KS (K81) are fantastic.

The piles of yummy smoked meats you'll have on your plate at the Hard 8 near KSEP in Stephenville, TX are amazing.

Bolton Field (KTZR I think) near Columbus has a BBQ joint on the field, but I wasn't all that impressed. Still, BBQ at an airport beats a lot of other things.

And forget the Texans. I don't care what kind of animal it was, slow-smoked meat slathered in spicy sauce is just awesome. Cow, pig, chicken, who cares? My future in-laws had a retirement/anniversary party a year or so ago with what I called a "picken" - A pig stuffed with chickens, smoked and pulled. Delicious!

Excellent summary. Note that the BBQ joint near BGD had the marbled stuff, not so good. Might try DHT next trip that direction since it was mentioned as acceptable in this thread.

After all this talk of BBQ, Mary and I had to fly to Lockhart, TX today to partake! We ate at Chisolm Trail for the first time, and were not disappointed.

Here's a pic of the FBO's BBQ Patrol Wagon, and Amelia:

Is that Troy Martin's new FBO?

I know this is an old thread, but it seems relevant for this post. Today I had lunch at the new restaurant at 4N1, Greenwood Lake NJ airport, Smoke Shack BBQ & burgers. I have no connection with them other then being a pilot who wants to help airport restaurants thrive. As you can tell from the name, they feature BBQ and burgers, but there is a fair amount of variety on the menu. The BBQ sandwich I had was very good (please those of you from the BBQ states, be gentle with criticizing someone from NJ offering a judgement on BBQ quality<G>). Their website with their menu is at:

I think that winter time is tough for an airport restaurant to start operation. If you are in the area and get a chance, stop by and check them out.

Greenwood Lake is an interesting airport in its own right. There is a Lockheed Constellation on the field that is built into the terminal and used as a pilot lounge overlooking the runway.

Their menu says they have chicken, brisket, and pork. That covers 3 of the 4 food groups (except pork ribs), so I think the place qualifies as a BBQ place.

Now I'm hungry.

Most anywhere in Texas, especially in Austin,
Warning, I can't speak for all of Yankeeland, but I tried to eat some vague meat they called Bar B Q at Airventure. It wasn't so bad itself, but then they put this pollutant that they called "white Bar B Q sauce" on it. I have never heard of white sauce anywhere that served sauce and it turns out it is mayonnaise with garlic in it. A stray dog wouldn't eat that stuff. My co pilot observed wisely that one does not go to Oshkosh for the food.

Do they have beef ribs? Every time I go to Texas and ask for ribs, they offer pork ribs. When I ask for beef ribs, they just shake their heads. I like BEEF ribs. The only place I find consistently good beef ribs is a small place along side the Intracoastal waterway in Ormond Beach, FL. But I'm not giving you my address.

And then there is this place...

https://jamiesbroadwaygrille.com/

They do BBQ better than actual BBQ places. Their brisket is better than anyone else's. They also do seafood better than any local place that does seafood. It is a hole in the wall place that Guy Fieri discovered, and now it's populated.

FWIW, I've been to two of those (Dinosaur in Syracuse and the on-field joint at Bolton Field) and wasn't impressed with either. One gets bonus points for being at an airport, but that doesn't make it great BBQ. I can only surmise that Dinosaur's reputation must be the result of a complete lack of any other place with edible BBQ in the Syracuse area.

However, ya never know where you're gonna find the good stuff. I just had one of the best pork sandwiches I've ever had last week in the small town of Coffeyville, KS (the "Piggly Wiggly" at Phelps' Hog Heaven).

I'm a Wisconsin native, and I've never heard of such a thing!

I did come across someone recently who was calling Sloppy Joe "BBQ" and that ain't right either. And some people in some other places call anything you grill "BBQ" and that's even what they call a grill. Weird.

There is decent Texas style BBQ in California, Maryland at the Mission Barbecue there...

Good to know there is at least one location East of St. Louis for charred beef that doesn't suck. ;)

Good to know. Always looking for a new place. Haven't been to 4N1 in years, do remember the Constellation there.
