BATD Expiration and Renewal?

Does anyone know how expirations and renewals of BATD work? I am thinking of buy a BATD but all say letter of approval expires X date. On their websites it says they plan to renew before expiration but how does this work?

Do they just get a renewal and that's it. Do you have to pay for upgrades or new software?

If they can't get renewal does it become a very expensive paperweight? Or can you upgrade parts to get approval again. Thanks in advance.

They generally renew in time. There may be an upgrade associated with it or not. It's just that the LOA tend to be time limited rather than open-ended forever. Here' for example is a 2019 renewal of a 2014 LOA for the Elite PI-135 (It has since expired too).
