RST Engineering is considering establishing an open free swap/sell board for avionics only. I'd appreciate the collective wisdom of the group as to how it should be run.

Separate sections for business ads and private party ads or just commingle them all together?

What sort of divisions? VHF Com, VHF Nav, GPS, what else would warrant a section of its own?

A drop-off date or just let them run until removed by owner? The problem with letting them run forever is that you will get a lot of ads collecting at the end that have already been sold.

It is YOUR board. What do you want to see on it?

Mandatory pricing and ads that expire after X days. Keeping dealer and private separate would be a bonus too.

When you look at TAP, most dealer ads turn into something like "Garmin 430 at XXX Avionics" that run forever. It's nothing more than a business card for the company. Tell us what you have now and how much. If you want to sell something, you know how much you want. If not, don't be offended when I offer $1 for your yellow tagged gps/com. Just post the damned price and save us both the hassle.

Most internet ads always seem to be seagull ads. The seller craps all over the place and never comes back. Lots of sites out there selling six month old Apollo units and new Narco with factory warranty. If the seller cant come back within a few weeks, he doesn't care if he sells it.

I would think you would want to separate classifieds and box ads in a 1-2-1 or 3-1 column arrangement with relevant box ads appearing with the related classified pages.

I think the idea to time out the classifieds is a good one.

How are you improving over ebay? What is your motivation to do this? Why should a seller list on your site?

Well, for one thing it is free. For another, it isn't an auction. For another it is really meant for private party to private party selling/swapping. I could think of a few more given enough time, but these will do for starters.

Post 3.

Maybe a section for certified vs EXP suitable. I don't really know the difference in the units, but I know a fair amount of avionics is different if not TSO or other certified plane type.

I like the ability to select to view only those with pictures. I'm not technical but I do like a purdy picture, a la Craigslist.

BTW, I have pictures of my sofa on sale on Craigslist.

When do you expect this site to be up and running, Jim? I have some items I was going to list for sale on eBay this coming Sunday.

It is going to be a while (one month> a while < one year). I'm completely rewriting the website (what a pain in the @$$) and then I'll start on the board.

Unless somebody else on here writes message boards and can do it sooner.

Thanks,

Jim

I'd keep professional/personal sellers separate, or at least offer an option to only show one, the other, or both. Regardless, you will run into issues with professional sellers posting as personal sellers. They are a cancer on Craigslist.

Don't worry about breaking everything down too far - or it gets overly complicated (NAV, COM, NAV/COM, GPS NAV/COM, etc.)

As mentioned above:
1. Make sellers list a price or, if swapping, list items they'd accept in trade
2. Delete ads after a certain time

Also, make sure there is a way to report bogus sellers/scammers so their accounts can be removed.

Good luck!

!

Went to look at a garden tractor fertilizer and dude was like, " yea, I also gotta charge tax because I'm running a business". I said drop your price $10 and I'll take it. He wouldn't budge, so I left. I ask on the phone if they are a business or if I am charged tax now. Only had one say yes in the last year though.

Good idea needs a little refinement, chance it could work. Hopefully it would not turn into a place where people try to peddle worthless avionics.
