Avare geo refs

Looking at alternatives to Foreflight.

Avare does not have geo ref plates, but there is a utility to define references on a plate with each update. My question is, do you need to define every fix and intersection on the plate, or is just defining the runway enough reference for the GPS to show relative position? The manual isn't clear on how to use this utility.

Would love to, but I confess I don't know how from my iPad. There's no addy to copy that I can see.

Search YouTube for "Avare: how to geo reference an approach plate" and it comes up. I have it saved in my favorites if you can't find it. There's gotta be some way to post a link.

Haven't gotten around to using this in flight yet but it looks pretty neat. More work on the end user than ForeFlight, but considering the cost of ForeFlight vs. the cost of Avare, I think I can deal with some slight inconveniences. Avare's come a long way in just the past couple months I've been using it.

One of the features on Avare that has come in handy is you can look up a location on Google Maps as long as it is a real street address or intersection and then "share" that with the Avare application and it will mark it for easy navigation to the spot.

A friend bought a piece of hunting property recently I wanted to fly over I knew the general area but it was easy to find on the satellite view I marked the nearest intersection and flew right to it using my Galaxy S5.

Avare does what I need. I am very happy with it.

And thanks to this thread, I remembered that when I first looked at them, a few airports in my area didn't have tagged approaches... they do now!

Hate to dump on open source, but Avare doesn't work on non-google android - annoying. And, well, the UI was very not very good. I will keep poking at it on the ground but not sure I trust it to save me workload in the sky.

Don't blame Zubair, he tried offering it through Amazon but Amazon didn't play nice. He does offer a manual installation method if you can't get it through Google Play:

The more I play with Avare, the more I like it. Yes, It's less feature rich than FF. And filing is not integrated. But what it does, it does very well.

Yep, installed just fine. First screen is register, which calls the Google Account api. Can't get past it without Google services on the device. Amazon won't approve it if it requires Google services. Bug posted in April by someone else - simple fix is to make registration optional. Or, add a registration form. Or call Amazon services. It being open source, I am sure they will get around to it eventually.

I'm trying this and have managed to make a flight plan but can't seem to find any details like times en route on legs, estimated speeds, fuel burned etc.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Fltplan mobile and Duats are the ones I use. Avare is kind of bare bones, and doesn't have a comprehensive planner integrated with all that stuff that I can find.

As an aside, I got a dual xgps 170 for abs-b weather with Avare. Short flight yesterday to test it and it worked great. (Other than the fact I left it on the charger overnight, and the red led never turned green to show full charge.)
