Anyone willing to teach some some basic maintenance at Kwhp or Los Angeles area?

I'm a new private pilot - about 140 hours and just got a '73 Cherokee 180 challenger. I'm interested in doing my own oil changes now and progressively learning as much as I can about owner maintenance. I was wondering if anyone in the Los Angeles area would be willing to meet up and show me the right way to change the oil? I'll buy lunch, coffee, beers, etc. Reading how to do these things online pales in comparison to a quick in person lesson. I'm based at Whiteman KWHP and am trying to meet people on the field and find the best maintenance resources. Thanks!

I know someone in the Santa Barbara area, not sure if that helps.

You know, this is somewhere shops could make some money, have a monthly class or something where they show new owners how to change oil, brakes, a tire etc. Bet if you advertised it right you could make some money doing it too!

Find a good mechanic ,who can teach you the basics,tell them your intentions. Not all mechanics are enthusiastic about this. I do owner assisted annuals now,and can take care of the basics sorry I'm not in your area.

Do like I do and just go hang out with your A&P, buy him lunch or whatever and hang around the shop while they're doing an annual oil change on something similar and watch.

It's so simple you'll be surprised.

Thanks for the advice. I don't have an A&P yet. I was hoping someone might also be able to recommend a good one for Piper Cherokees...one who would be ok with owner assisted annuals and teach me a few things.

Is there a tenant organization at the airport? Get in touch with them.
There are a huge number of resources available, all nearby to you. They will have the best info on A&Ps, etc.

By the way, pretty much every A&P is competent to do a C172 or a cherokee, the most benign and simple factory airplanes around. If an A&P doesn't want to work on either, there's two reasons - 1) so simple they can't make enough money on the hourly rate or 2) they don't know what they're doing. Either way, you want to avoid them.

Again, find local flying/pilot organizations.
