Anyone have a place in Maui?

So the wife and I are travelling to Hawaii in October for a family friends wedding. However, that's going to literally be a single afternoon, and we're staying for 7-10 days.

We've found several very nice resorts, bungalows and the like. They are great, but I wanted to see if any of you have a spot that you recommend in Maui, a place that you rent, own etc? Got a spot for us?

As a side note, I would really like to get a little flying time in while I'm there if at all possible, so I'm looking for some info there as well.

Can't help with a place to crash but for flying I recommend Maui Aviators. Flew with them about 15 years ago so I don't have current knowledge.

Second the recommendation for Maui Aviators. I've posted about them elsewhere on this site before - flew with them in December.

As for stays in Maui, I've had good luck with finding condos on VRBO. You can search for your date range and a bunch of other criteria and sort by price, reviews, etc. Have you been to Maui before? Which area do you want to stay in? Wailea is typically the more expensive area, and Kihei is probably one of the cheapest. The west side areas of Kaanapali, Kapalua, etc are very nice - a little less expensive than Wailea but more than Kihei. It all depends on what you want to do for the majority of your time.

I recommend reading the Maui travel forum on TripAdvisor and asking any specific questions you have - you will get good responses. A lot of people (including myself) have posted detailed trip reports there.
 
Third for Maui Aviators. Flew with them and got my wife to fly when we were there last June on our honeymoon. We stayed at the Westin. The Westin has nice timeshares.
 
I was there in Feb 2014. 2 days of IFR and finally got to fly on the 3rd day. It was a short flight. If the first 2 days would have been in VFR, it would have been a better experience. Not blaming them for the weather.

They had 2 of their 4 airplanes in annual. The one I flew in was rough. My CFI was a good guy, but I would not fly with him again. He was a haole and did not know the island at all.

Call ahead and get a local.

Cool, thanks for the info!

So the wedding event is in Wailea and we like the Kaanapali / Napali area to stay in. Neither of us have been to Maui before.

Hopefully someone on here has the "magic spot" that we can rent and it has servants and tan Hawaiian girls in hula skirts moving side to side, and a whole pig roasting on the beach, you know, "the basics".

Thanks for all the info y'all. Like I said it's in October, so hopefully I'll get some more feedback in the meantime and make my wife very happy with our trip.
 
I stayed here two years ago - a nice, two bedroom clean condo close to everything. I booked it through one of the discount sites (hotels.com or similar) and paid only a little over $100 per night. Highly recommended.

The Road to Hana is a must if you stay on Maui - take your time and plan frequent stops! Then pass through Hana (nothing to see there except the red sand beach), and continue for a few minutes onto the 7 Sacred Pools, and, a few minutes beyond that, fellow aviator Charles Lindbergh's grave at the Palapala Ho'omau Congregational Church.

I've been with the family to Maui 2-3 times, always stay at a condo in Puamana (outside Lahaina)..many places available on VRBO. Only gated community in/on Maui.

Highly recommended.

Before you go pick up and read "Maui Revealed", a book that talks about the places things to see on Maui, mostly known to the locals. Most tourists drive the road to Hana, and it's probably well worth it (I've never been), we drove around the north side of the Island, and thought it was great. We were in a Dodge Caravan, and the road was so narrow and winding that Grandma ( in the middle row of seats) decided she was going to bail, she opened the sliding door and almost got out, while we were moving. There were a couple of corners on the road that said Max 5 (five) MPH, and that might have been fast for the corner. However, this is a road that the school bus travels 5 days a week.

The other book I would suggest is Hawaii, By Michener. Gives a perspective to some of things that you will see, and history is plentiful on Maui. Lahaina used to be the capital of Hawaii, (1820-1845). Good place to shop and celebrity spot.B)
 
eaglepilot, I had NO clue about VRBO, or that area of Maui and man am I glad you posted that! We found and booked our spot and it is PERFECT. The wife is giddy, and that means lots of naked time!

I have been to Maui many times and stayed in most areas. Napili is my favorite, but you will need to rent a house or a condo (I have rented houses over there a couple of times, with step access to snorkeling). If you PM me, I can provide the info of the houses I have rented. There are some condos at Napili, but I have not stayed at any of those. I have stayed at some nice condos in Kihei and that would be cheaper than Napili and near Waliea.

I second that - awesome book. Perfect vacation read in between naked times!
